Book Review: Shabbat Basics for any Jewish Family
Summary: 4 Stars
Regardless of your level of Jewish observance, this book - along with its companions on Passover and Chanukah should have a place on your baby / toddler bookshelf.
The illustrations are clear and simple, showing the steps leading up to Shabbat, including making challah. They also show a bit of the "history" of Shabbat - the creation story, in very general terms even a toddler can sort of understand.
Rituals and ritual objects - like the havdalah ceremony, which uses a spice box - are presented with classic Dorling-Kindersley simplicity, and as with others in this series, there's a "review" at the end of the book covering educational basics like colours.
The family shown is fairly generic: mother, father and a couple of children. Kippot are worn for rituals throughout, however, the mother's hair is uncovered, which may discourage some families from using the book.
However, it's so difficult to find a nice, simple introduction to Shabbat - even for kids who've been doing it their whole life - that we prefer not to call attention to this detail and instead use the book as a springboard for talking about the many, many things that make Shabbat special in our lives.
