Book Reviews of My Grandfather's Son : A Memoir

Book Review: I could not put the book down
Summary: 5 Stars

Some reviewers said they could not put the book down. Yeah right, an autobiography of a judge. Snore.... I could not put this book down. I read it in one day. I had no idea what he went through in life. I have not read a book by an African American this good since the Autobiography of Malcolm X. It belongs in the same class.

If you are a human being who wants to learn what it was like to grow up in his unbelievably impoverished childhood and become a lawyer read this book. If you have indoor plumbing you will feel over privilidged and spoiled. I was emotionally drained by the end of the book. Anyone who thinks Clarence Thomas is a lapdog of white people is in for a shock.

Book Review: Good book by a good man
Summary: 5 Stars

I really liked this book. Clarence Thomas did not have an easy life and didn't choose to be where he is today but I'm glad he is. And people that haven't read the book and are 1 starring it because they are haters get a grip. Read the book and then see if you feel the same. Just because you are black doesn't mean you have to be politically liberal anymore than being black means you have to like fried chicken and watermelon.

Book Review: Good man
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched the confirmation of the judge and thought he was a very sincere individual. He may not be the smartest judge of the 9 but he makes his rulings based on common sense and by the heart which most of us ordinary people can relate to.

Book Review: Woe Is Me
Summary: 1 Stars

Pity poor Clarence Thomas. He writes in "My Grandfather's Son" that he, the most visible affirmative action hire in the country, is so distraught over having been admitted to Yale Law School under affirmative action that he thinks his law degree from this prestigious institution is "...worth fifteen cents". Presumably, this is why he now seeks to deny others the benefits he reaped from this important program. What seems to rankle Mr. Justice Thomas most however is his perception that he was denied the opportunity to go to Wall Street and bray for money with so many of his law school classmates and had to "settle" for a public service job, albeit one that came with a powerful political patron. "My Grandfather's Son" also shows clearly that the justice has an enemies list longer than Richard Nixon's and that he is in the process of laughing up the sleeve of his judicial robe at every last one of them as he tailors the constitution to fit the conservative Republican agenda.

Book Review: A Chronicle of the American Dream
Summary: 5 Stars

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is normally so quiet--on the bench and about his public life--that he almost has been perceived as reclusive. Finally, thoroughly, and happily, he has spoken (written) with "My Grandfather's Son: A Memoir."

Thomas chronicles his rise from poverty, his upbringing by his grandfather who taught him lessons of personal responsibility, and his up-and-down road to the Supreme Court. All the while Thomas honestly depicts the barriers he faced and the hurdles he had to overcome.

Of course, Thomas also finally speaks about the Anita Hill charges. With candor about the pain and with substantiating evidence about the facts, his side of the story is finally told.

But the greater message of the book is the story of how Thomas moved beyond suffering and prejudice and bias to live the America dream. It is a story filled with hope and dignity. It is a story worth telling and worth reading.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction , Spiritual Friends, and Soul Physicians.
