Book Review: A Book with Brains (& Heart)

This is a love story. Simply put, there it is; a story of love, the kind that obsesses to the exclusion of all else, turning over and over in your brain a writhing bolus of rattlesnake emotions, constantly imagining new scenarios, ways things may have turned out differently. In this book, those other scenarios come to life, and they rampage.
So, love; the sort that drives you around the twist.
Gerdes is an experimentalist, a writer who zigs when you think he will zag; he is a Rabelaisian writer, in the sense that J.M. Cohen wished to coin, as a writer "who is in love with his medium, the man for whom words call up associations, in contrast to the man who employs them to express previously conceived notions", rightly noting that this is what truly links Rabelais to James Joyce rather then an interest in scatalogical matters... and from Joyce, to Gerdes? Yes, I think so; the playfulness, the delight in displaying obscure erudition... the love of the medium.
A book which is not for the faint of heart, or those who like to check their brain at the door.
