Book Reviews of My Many Colored DaysBook Review: There are better books about colors... Summary: 3 StarsI purchased this book for "my" children because of our many positive experiences with Dr Seuss books in the past. However, when it came to the color, black, it was disheartening to see such a negative association with a word many young children identify with. It is frustrating enough that many people already consider "white good and black bad" but having someone like Dr Seuss reinforce it by linking black with rage was dis appointing. A much better alternative: My Crayons Talk, by Hubbard. Though Hubbard's works are less familiar, the positive connection of black with wisdom is much much better for young children. The cost of Hubbard's book is so reasonable, that its worth it to purchase it, even without an extensive description at Amazon.com. Or check it out at your local library. I think it is important that subtle, and not so subtle references, to black and white in children's literature be positive ones.I am not accusing this Seuss book of prejudice, just a lack of sensitivity in this one regard.
Book Review: Greatest book for all ages! Summary: 5 StarsThis book describes ALL of us. Our days are different as are we and this book hits the mark! It shows us that it is OK to be have different emotions. That is what makes us who we are. I bought one for my son, my Mom and I give it as a gift to new Moms.
Book Review: Peaceful, calm, cozy. Summary: 5 StarsThis was one of my son's favorite books when he was an infant. He would calm right down when I read it to him. It is still one of my favorite books to read to him, though now that he is 3, he only likes it before bed as it is a little too peaceful for middle-of-the day readings. The illustrations are visually stimulating, interesting, and not the same old "primary color block" pictures that many infant books use....making it a pleasure for baby/toddler and parent alike. This will remain in our collection as a "this was one of your favorites" books to pass down through the years. Enjoy!
Book Review: Horrible! Summary: 1 StarsI can't believe the positive reviews this book is getting. I'm all for discussing emotions with a child, but this book goes too far! It confuses sad with manic depressive! It gives permission to be dark, mean, & brooding. My son was given this book by a well-meaning relative, but after only a few readings, my husband and I have decided to permanently shelve this one. We are well educated parents who believe in being honest with our child, but this book contains subject matter that is inappropriate for any child.
Book Review: Wonderful, wonderful book for all ages! A new "classic" Summary: 5 StarsWe first starting reading this book in the library and just HAD to have it. It's the kind of book that sticks with you all day. My kids, 6 months and 2 1/2 years just love it and want it read to them over and over again. My older child can now relate some of her moods using this book and my baby just loves all the brightly coloured pages & illustrations. This is a wonderful book that joins the ranks of Goodnight Moon, Brown Bear Brown Bear and any Sandra Boynton book in our library.
