Book Review: A beautiful book
Summary: 5 Stars
The book tells the plot of "My Neighbor Totoro" with short paragraphs of text and breathtakingly beautiful images from the film. There is a "Meet the characters" in the beginning and a map of the surroundings at the end and about a 100 pages of sharp and colorful images of print quality in between.
Only when I had read this book I understood what a horrible deed the TV screen (or DVD) does to this film. The animation foreground figures, like people, Totoros and all other moving objects are mostly ok on TV/DVD, since they are rather simple colored surfaces, but the backgrounds lack the stunning quality that can be seen in the images of this book. Prime examples are the picture of Mei in Totoro's cave on page 35 and Satsuki looking out for Mei on pages 84-85. They are works of art worth seeing.
I was definitely positively surprised for the quality and beauty of this book. As a parent to a child who would watch Totoro almost every day, I find the book also pretty handy as a means to discuss the events in the film.
