Book Reviews of My Secret BullyBook Review: My Secret Bully = A "Frenemy" Summary: 5 Stars
I have used this book in my third grade classroom to enlighten my students on an aspect of bullying that isn't wildly discussed. We usually deem a bully as someone who is beligerent, loud and ALWAYS cruel. But after reading this book, children begin to see that a friend might also be a bully in disguise. Consult Webster's dictionary for the word "frenemy." A frenemy is one who pretends to be a friend but is actually an enemy. This book openly discusses just that subject - having a "friend" who in reality is an enemy.
Book Review: Relational Bullying--great book! Summary: 4 Stars
It is fantastic to finally see a book out there for school age girls who are victims of relational bullying. My only concern about this book is how quickly the matter seems to resolve in the end. I think the author does a great job setting it up, describing how relational bullying happens. I just wish there was a little more attention paid to the longer term impact on the victim as well as the difficulty of the situation in general. Overall a great book and one I'm thrilled to have in my library!
Book Review: There will always be bullies; learning to cope with them is key Summary: 5 Stars
When my 6 year old daughter broke down and told me that some girls in her first grade class were not being nice to her, the first thing that I did was cry. When I finally could talk about it, I told her teacher from Kindergarten who lent me her copy of My Secret Bully. My daughter and I read it over and over again. We talked about the similarities between her situation and Monica's. She was surprised and relieved to realize that she was not the only person who had a "friend" who suddenly was not very nice to her. She asked me to share it with her teacher, which I did while we were discussing what was occuring in my daughter's classroom. I gave her a copy of the book (and also a copy to head of the lower school).
She read it to the class and they discussed it. It took some intervention on my part and the part of the school to stop the unkind behavior, but throughout the process, my daughter slept with My Secret Bully at the foot of her bed. Three months later, I still see her pick it up and read it from time to time. There will always be bullies, but my hope is that My Secret Bully will help her to cope now and in the years ahead.
Book Review: Too simple Summary: 3 Stars
After reading all the postivie reviews, I bought this book for my daughter who is in 2nd grade and already struggling with bullies. I thought there would be some good techniques to help her deal with it. The book is good but the story is too simple. I realize it is targeted to a younger reader, but it could be more useful had they shown different approaches and possible outcomes, making it a little more realistic.
Book Review: Very Simplistic Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this book for my 9 year old daughter and found it to be overly simplistic. Very short story (pitched at about a 2nd grade reading level) with only one practical suggestion about what to do. There was a list of 8 tactics at the end, but they were so generic (tell the bully to stop; report it to an adult; use humor to deflect bullying...) and so lacking in examples that my daughter's response to every one was "I tried that; I already do that."
This type of bullying typically occurs when girls hit fourth grade through middle school, yet the content of the book comes across as something you would read to a much younger child. Very disappointing.
