Book Reviews of My Sister's Keeper: A NovelBook Review: Thought provoking Summary: 5 StarsWhat a wonderful and moving book this is, raising questions on many fronts about what we owe our children and what love is. The relationship between the siblings is drawn well, as is the anguish the whole family lives with. Yes, I cried. And at the end I could only be grateful that I have never been in the position to make the decisions the characters had to face.
Book Review: Family Dynamics and Human Relationships Summary: 5 StarsMy Sister's Keeper is a well-written, deeply observant book. It successfully addresses the social impact of advances in medical science, without preaching or getting schmaltzy. At its heart, this is a book about responsibility, guilt, family dynamics and human relationships. Written from a first-person perspective throughout, it views events through the eyes of all concerned, putting the reader firmly inside the head of each participant in turn. There are several unexpected twists as the story unfolds, shifting the reader's allegiance from one side of the central debate to another. Who is being selfish? Who selfless? How can anyone bear to make decisions like these, when the lives of their loved ones are at stake? By the time you've read this book, you'll have a better idea of how you'd cope in their shoes.
Book Review: So happy to see this book being picked up by Richard & Judy Summary: 5 StarsI first came across Jodi Picoult a couple of years ago when I was in New York. I've since managed to track down most of her books, mostly in the States, as they're not that easy to come by in the UK. Why??? I read this one a few months ago, and it affected me more profoundly than any book has since A Prayer For Owen Meany. It is a fabulous read, with strong, vivid characters, a stunning narrative, and one of the most harrowing endings you can imagine. I sobbed for hours when I finished it. As the mother of two children, the dilemma at the heart of the story was very real to me. Now that My Sister's Keeper has been chosen by Richard & Judy, I really hope that Jodi Picoult gets the recognition in the UK that she most definitely deserves. I have only today finished another of her superb novels: Keeping Faith. If anything, it's even better than My Sister's Keeper, and I would recommend it to everyone.
Book Review: Fiction That Could Be Reality Summary: 5 StarsThough this is a fictitious book, you realize through reading this book that it could be a reality. Another form of child abuse. Cruel abuse. To be born only to help a sibling live. The book is compelling! Read Nightmares Echo as well
Book Review: An wonderful book - a real tearjerker Summary: 5 StarsI read this book primarily because I have a 14 year old cousin who has had leukaemia and other forms of cancer cince she was 2, so the story struck a chord. Medically it is very accurate and well researched. However, this is far from the most important aspect of this book. This is a quite wonderful story that examines a hugely important issue in modern life through a really gripping and moving story. Never at any point does it feel like a lecture, and yet you come out of it having really confromted some issues you never had before, and examined your own beliefs. It is a reallt though provoking and important book.More than this it is a really well written story, told through the eyes of the various characters involved in the events. Basically, the story is about a girl who takes her parents to court for medical emancipation because she has been used as a donor for her sick sister all her life, andwants the chance to make decisions about her own body. This story is told through wonderful characters with whom you feel really involved and compassionate for. The central character Anna is beautifully drawn, so much so that you almost think the writer is a 13 year old herself, as she seems to understand this little girl so well. The book does have points that are difficult to read, not because they are gruesome or anything like that, but because you cant imagine what it must be like to have a child going through such an experience. This just makes the book all the more moving and heartbreaking. The twist at the end of the book is amazing. It came out of nowhere and really knocked the stuffing out of me. Like other reviewers, this is one of the few books to have ever made me cry. It really is one of the best pieces of fiction I have ever read, and I cannmot recommend it or praise it highly enough.
