Book Reviews of My Sister's Keeper: A NovelBook Review: best book i've read for ages Summary: 5 StarsI didn't know quite what to expect when I got this book. I thought it might be a bit heavy with the sensitive story line. It took about two pages and I was hooked. I loved the way it was written. Anna's story is heartbreaking. I could almost feel Kate's pain and I went from admiring to hating to cheering for Sara by the end. This is a remarkable book. It makes you cry and laugh and I didn't want it to end.I loved all the charactors even Judge the dog and no I didn't see the real reason for his constant attachment to the lawyer coming until the dramatic explanation in the court, although I loved Campbell's different witty reasons he gave to everyone. Get this book, read this book and don't put the light off til you get past the sad sad ending. I cried with Brian and you will too. Perfect!
Book Review: My sister's keeper - Jodi Picoult Summary: 5 StarsI thought that this book was fantastic. You put yourself into the parent's shoes and ask yourself what would I do? When I got to the end I knew what was going to happen and I sobbed and sobbed. It is a great book and makes you look at yourself and family and how we would deal with it. A very ironic ending but heart warming as well.
Book Review: Anna's Life Summary: 5 StarsAnna was brought in to this world to help her sister who has a rare form of cancer. Anna has given her sister so much of herself that she finally can stand no more. This book borders on reality and is a scary thought that other children might actually be living Anna's life. Is it morally injustice to bring a child in to the world just to keep another alive? You will ask yourself so many question in this book. It is a rare read and well worth its weight in gold. also read Non Fiction Book: Nightmares Echo/Katlyn Stewart and A Paper Life by Tatum O'Neil
Book Review: My Sister's Keeper Summary: 5 StarsA surprising new author to me - I couldn't get over how much this book made me think about the issues of designer babies. Not many 'lighter reads' are so memorable - read, enjoyed and forgotten, The characters in this book are so believable - I became Anna, one of the sisters, and hated the mother at times. The ending is so surprising that I couldn't get to sleep for ages!
Book Review: A sentimental page turner but no more. Summary: 2 StarsSome backgound. I had never heard of Picoult when I picked up this book. Why did I read it ? Because I thought I'd read the 10 books nominated for the Richard and Judy Best Read Award 2005. The experience was mostly enjoyable, but this, I thought, was one of 3 sub-standard books in the Top Ten. On the plus side I would concede that Picoult has a simple and readable style. To that extent the book is a real page turner and won't occupy too much of your time. She employs a multiple narrative style in the book and that too works well and the story is easy to follow. Put simply the novel is all about the relationship of Anna, who is 13 years old to her older sister Kate, who has leukaemia. Without Anna, Kate would die and in fact Anna was "conceived" in order to help her sister live. The story begins when Anna takes her parents to court over her right to decide for herself if she wants to be a donor for her sister anymore. The next operation on the horizon is a kidney transplant. I don't want to reveal any details of the plot development but this novel descends into bathos, with a hand-wringingly sentimental conclusion. The way that all the loose ends are tidied up is most unfortunate, especially the plot line concerning Jesse, who is the older brother of the two girls at the centre of the plot. I could just see this novel being turned into a ghastly Hollywood film and perhaps Picoult could to. The novel also features a large sub-plot concerning Anna's lawyer Campbell and her legal guardian,Julia. This sub-plot is a stereotypical soppy romance which is linked to Anna and her sister's dilemma in the most ridiculous manner. Frankly it detracts from the original story line and I'm at a loss to understand why Picoult felt it necessary to develop it. So I'm sorry all you Picoult fans, this book did nothing for me, even though I have 2 daughters ! I couldn't help feeling all along that this novel had been written simply to exploit a dramatic medical and moral problem and I can't help feeling that this kind of motivation is very unlikely to produce good literature.
