Book Review: "C at Best"

I read this book because of Picoult's popularity among young adults and because it will be required reading for my school's eighth graders this coming year. As the parent of two teen girls, I was able to empathize with the parents' plight. However, I cannot believe how one-sided the mother was towards Kate and Anna. The premise of the book's ethical dilemma was a good one, but I don't think it was really explored enough. At what point do we allow medical conditions to trump moral conditions? Sure, at first Anna's umbilical cord was easy enough to give up, but how much is too much? Can we ever really see far enough down that slippery slope to know?
Additionally, I thought the ending was a complete cop-out. I had really looked forward to seeing how the characters/author would handle this huge ethical dilemma, but, alas I didn't get to see how Picoult handled that because she chose the easy way out. Also, I thought Campbell's medical condition was a bit overdone, and I immediately knew why he had the dog. How would he allow that seemingly benign condition come between him and Julia? He isn't that incapacitated!
As a former English teacher, I give this book a C at best. It was an easy read and interesting but somewhat lackluster.
