Book Review: 3.5 Stars-No Spoilers
Summary: 4 Stars
My Soul to Take is the first Rachel Vincent novel I've read, and I'm not disappointed. A main character that has death premonitions is not new, but certain paranormal beings in the novel are very new and unique, so the death thing is not a problem for me. The mystery of why the main character is seeing people die, and why seemingly healthy teenagers are dying are both interesting, and kept me reading. I wanted to find out more and more, and that is very important in a novel. A few things made me take a step back from my enjoyment though. First, our main male character Nash, came off as too harsh at first. He grabs the main character, Kaylee pretty roughly and pushes her around a bit. On one hand I understand it, because at that point Kaylee was extremely helpless and defeated, but on the other hand it felt wrong to me. Also, I felt the romance was a bit rushed. Again, on one hand they are teenagers and this is a romance novel, on the other hand it makes Nash comes off as forceful, which is not a redeeming quality in a male teenage main character. My major issue though, was the drama. I'm used to a certain amount of drama, angst, and introspection in my YA books, but sometimes it rubs me the wrong way. I felt there was just a bit too many inner monologues from Kaylee in My Soul to Take, and a bit too much teenage drama, which really took my enjoyment from a 4 to a 3.5. Still, there is much less drama in this book than others I have read, so don't let it deter you too much. Lastly, I wished the book was a bit longer. I enjoyed everything, but I want more! Not necessarily another separate story, but more detail in this particular story. Overall, My Soul to Take is unique and keeps the reader entertained. The mystery was enjoyable, the paranormal entities are interesting, and the characters have depth. I will definitely continue the series.
