Book Reviews of Mystic River

Book Review: A great character-driven story
Summary: 5 Stars

Lehane's story writing abilities and dialog were brilliant. The characters realistic with depth and complexity. You feel like you know them, you experience their pain, know their motivations as well as their flaws and choices.

This is a well written mystery but not a thriller. There were surprises, twists and turns but not real gripping suspense where you was concerned about what was going to happen on the next page. The writing is tight without a lot of unnecessary padding like so many books.

Author of al-Qaeda Strikes Again

Book Review: An interesting ride...
Summary: 4 Stars

I just finished this book. I avoided watching the movie so I could read the book first. It was certainly different. The way the characters talked was interesting (and a little over the top), but still a great read. Towards the end there are definitely some (ugly) surprises. The last hundred pages of the book kept me really interested. I stayed up late finishing it. That's a good book when you ignore sleep for it. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who wants something a bit different. The ending was disturbing, but well written.

Book Review: Another Great Book by a Great New(er) Writer
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read many of Dennis Lehane's novels, and this is certainly one of his best. Unfortunately I had seen the movie a couple years prior to reading the book, which is not the direction I like to go since nearly every movie fails miserably in it representation of the book. However, I realized two things: the movie did a very good job of representing the book and the book was still fresh and new to me. Anyone who is looking for a great read to introduce them to a potentially new author, this is a wonderful invitation into Dennis Lehane's Bostonian world.

Book Review: Another Great Read
Summary: 5 Stars

You may think to yourself that if you've seen the movie, there's no need to read the book and you would be wrong. This is a fantastic book and the characters are so well developed you feel each of the three friends emotions -- even though sometimes they are at odds. There's no clear villian, just three people dealing with their own demons. His writing is so amazing - he never goes into details about the child molestation, but how the character has to deal with this in his adult life. I loved it.

Book Review: Dark and Depressing
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first book by Dennis Lehane that I've ever read. I heard about the film adaptation of "Mystic River" and I decided to read the novel. The story is dark, gloomy, and almost operatic. Its general humorlessness may put some people off, but I don't mind the depressing atmosphere. Plot twists are aplenty, and tension is high. This was a fantastic read, and I'm sure the film adapation is as good as this.
