Book Review: "Kiss" Your Money Goodbye

I will reiterate what many Jacqueline Carey fans are saying - I loved both of the Kushiel trilogies. The world building and imagery were great. The protagonists lovable and the antagonist - you really love to hate. The storylines - riveting. NK missed the mark for me on quite a few levels. Moirin was so the anti heroine. I felt no sympathy or empathy for her at all. I understand that every female cannot be Phedre, but she did not exhibit any of the qualites I expected from one of JC's heroines. The writing seemed shallow and forced and while I can remember most of the minor characters from the other works, just about everyone but Moirin, Raphael and Jehanne have already faded from my memory. I read and listened to the first 6 books and enjoyed both forms immensely, but trying to conserve funds this time, I purchased NK in audiobook form only. I am glad about that, but sorry I wasted the money at all. At least I could have returned the book. I could fill a page with tally marks of the number of times Moirin said she was "Sorry" about something she'd done. It was quite grating on the nerves. The unplausible love interest angle between Bao and Moirin tore it for me. I could go on and on, but I won't. I can only hope that the next effort(s) by Ms. Carey remain true to her prior formulas. I would really hate to stop reading a wonderfully gifted author. I haven't given up on her, but I'll be hesitant to buy her next book without first finding out if she's gone back to her old writing style. If you must read this, check it out of a library or borrow it from someone who already has it.
