Book Reviews of Naked Computer

Book Review: Great Early Computer Geek Novel
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the first novel by Joe Cottonwood, who went on to achieve cult fame with "Famous Potatoes" and then "Frank City, Goodbye". You'll find his web site at www.joecottonwood.com, but he doesn't bother to mention this book; perhaps he's embarrassed? This is a crude vanity press edition with a print run of 400 copies, so it's difficult to find. (If your need is desperate, contact me!) It's the kind of book you expect would vanish without a trace, except I find it worth remembering and even savoring. The main character is a madman programmer, realistically and sympathetically rendered. Note that programming is a highly structured activity, and becoming a programmer enforces a logical mental discipline that warps your thinking and permeates your life. So the rational programmer is doomed to clash with a world that refuses to be sensible. What are we supposed to do about that? I don't exactly know the answer, and I wouldn't even say an answer exists, but the question is important. Logic crowds out magic, and magic sneers at logic, but we need both to be human. "The Naked Computer" captures the spirit of the programmer and his struggle better than any other fictional portrait I know, and I was touched by it.
