Book Review: It cries for all who have known suffering and loss.
Summary: 4 Stars
The passionate despair and lingering hostility felt by the Southern soldiers after the battle at Nashville and later as civilians are wounds laid open by Madison Jones, making the reader feel that pain, too. The novel is a gem of storytelling in a restrained voice that was made too wise too soon by the appalling experience of a boy blasted out of innocence by battle all around--and within--him. It is also a lament for the people who were, in their eyes, "a people" and had lost all to an invader. This is a straight-from-the-shoulder Southern point of view, yet, paradoxically, it cries for all everywhere who have known suffering and loss. My regret is that Nashville is a slim volume because I felt really there and wanted more. Bryce Moreland
