Book Review: Exceedingly well done, but that does not mean it is worth reading

NAZI LITERATURE IN THE AMERICAS consists of thirty profiles of fictitious literati from the Americas, both South and North, all of whom can be associated in some way with the Nazis or fascism, broadly construed. A few actually had personal contact with historical Nazis (one, as a baby, was dandled by Der Fuhrer), some belonged to avowedly fascist or "Aryan" organizations, but with others the connection seems to be their proclivity for meretricious literature.
The last piece, "The Infamous Ramirez Hoffman", is much different in style and tone. (It is a brief variation of Bolano's novel "The Distant Star".) The other 29 profiles are presented in a dry, dead-pan style, much like that of a literary journal or an encyclopedia. It becomes clear that frequently Bolano is being humorous, but that humor occasionally is quite black and invariably is sardonic and mocking. If one knew whether actual literary figures were being caricatured (for example, one profile arguably mocks Allen Ginsberg and the Beats) the book obviously could also be read as more targeted literary criticism.
NAZI LITERATURE IN THE AMERICAS is exceedingly well done, but that does not mean that reading it is pleasurable or worthwhile. A little over two-thirds of the way through I became tired and bored with it -- at bottom, after all, it consists of not much more than descriptions of a dizzying array of remarkably bad literature written by an aggregation of pathetically self-absorbed misfits -- and I read the remainder without much interest. It was a disappointment in contrast to the other Bolano works I had read, "Amulet" and "Last Evenings on Earth."
