The author does a marvelous job of showing the importance of Negro slave songs from multiple perspectives. Not only were these songs often the only remnants of the slaves African cultures, they also became the basis of much of American popular music. Surprisingly, many of these slave songs are still known and sung in the United States, albeit with sanitized lyrics (such as the children's songs "This Old Man/Knicknack Pad-a-whack" and "Jimmy Crack Corn"). This is a book that anyone with an interest in history and musicology should spend time with.
