Book Reviews of Nelson Mandela

Book Review: Mandela- in detail
Summary: 4 Stars

As the saying goes in South Africa
''When the whites came, we had the land and they had the bible. They asked us to prayand when we opened our eyes, they had the land and we had the bible.'' Soweto in 1992

The words of Nelson Mandela in court in 1964 before his 27 year imprisonment.
''I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the Ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal, which I hope to live for and achieve. But if needs be , it is an ideal or which I am prepared to die.''

In 1985 Special Aka lead by Jerry Damners(who I am a fan of) released a song titled 'Free Nelson Mandela'. I was 13 years old. before then I had never heard of Nelson Mandela, although I did know about apartheid as it was in the news a lot back then when I was growing up.

When Nelson Mandela became the first black president in South Africa on 10th May 1994, I remember watching this on tv with my mum when I was still living in London. This moment was watched by 1 Billion people all over the worldwide. It really was a historical moment.

This biography goes into detail about Nelson Mandela from birth to his retirement. It also mentions Oliver Tambo who was one of Nelson Mandela's best friends that was there from the start of the struggle with Nelson Mandela and it was Oliver who started the 'Free Nelson Mandela' campaign around the world.
This book has many pictures showing the his birthplace, where he became a lawyer, starting the ANC movement to being a prisoner as well as shocking photos of massacres in Sharpville and Soweto. It gave me insight into the whole history of apartheid in South Africa and the struggles in the last century. But even though things have changed politically in South Africa I am not naive to think that its gotten better... Yeah of course its better than before but they still have a long way to go to get the country back up i.e financially, dealing the the problem of poverty and the Aids epidemic that is the cause of suffering by black people in that region.
I kicked myself when he came to visit London in the 90's. He was escorted by Prince Charles in central london, about 250,000 people were there to greet him and I wish I was there just to see him in the flesh.
He was imprisoned for 27 years for what he believed in and was released to run the country that once persecuted his family and his people. His spirit was never broken. His belief in Justice for his people kept him strong all these years.
Nelson, You are our Hero.
