Book Reviews of Network Warrior: Everything you need to know that wasn't on the CCNA exam

Book Review: Best Networking Book Period
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a network engineer, pretty new at it though. This book is my constant companion. I have had more questions answered from this book than from any 2 other sources combined. I travel alot for business and at 2am its hard to find someone to answer my questions. This thing hits the spot.

Book Review: CCNA and Beyond...
Summary: 4 Stars

As the back of the book says, "This book begins where certification exams leave off...". I've just stepped off my first real Network Engineering contract job, and is still studying for that elusive CCNA. I have been a Sys Admin for over ten years and I must say - the World of Networks is the "true" IT. I've had a Network + cert for almost a decade, but I was NOT prepared for some of the things required on the real job arena. Some engineers that worked with me didn't yet have their CCNA either, but they knew their stuff.

If you are studying for a CCNA certification yourself, you have to ask yourself one question - are studying to pass a test, or do you want to learn something? If you want to learn, get a Network Engineering job, or go to a GOOD school. If you want to pass a test, then read the book(s), and study the practice exams. There's no short cuts around either road. This book, by Gary Donahue, promises to bridge that missing link between the classroom and the server room. I haven't read all of it of course (I just got it today), but I had breezed through a digital copy of the book before I actually bought a physical copy from Amazon. This book is 1.25 inches thick and comes with a 45-Day access to the digital version from Safari. However, there just is no comparison between a solid book you can hold in your hands and a digital book. A REAL book is something you can mark with notes and highlights - that's how you can truly own a book.

But I also live in a small apartment in New York City, so shelve space is also an issue. Plus digital books make great reference materials, searches take seconds. It's a balance, there is no panacea for all situations.

My order from Amazon.com came in TWO days, and I only chose the FREE Super Saver Shipping option, so I didn't even pay extra. Only the New York sales tax (Arrgh!). I'm very happy with my purchase, and is very pleased with the U.S. government for building the internet for Amazon.com to do business in. I'm giving this book FOUR stars, because there is not even a single mention of "ROLLOVER cable" in it. Yes, I am deliberately being picky.

Book Review: Cisco-specific book
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this book because of the rave reviews here, and I have been a bit disappointed so far. Why? Not because of the author's style which is clear and concise - but because of expectations based on reviews I read, and the book title "Network Warrior." I expected a book which would cover all protocols, not just ones used in Cisco-land.

If this book were called "Cisco Network Warrior" I would certainly give it 4 or 5 stars.

Here are two examples - I want to implement GVRP in a mixed-vendor environment, but this book is of no help. GVRP is in fact supported on cisco equipment, but there is not even a passing reference to it in the section on the cisco-proprietary VTP. In addition I was hoping for a clear description of the standards-based LACP, but it is only given brief mention in a section on Etherchannel.

To his credit, the author mentions that he takes a Cisco-centric view in the book.. It's just that I was misled by one of the amazon reviews.

Book Review: Clear
Summary: 4 Stars

+ : the style is very clear and a good fit for
intermediate users.
- : many topics are missing, wireless and VPN mostly.

Overall i consider it a good book because what is included, is quite clearly explained.

Book Review: Does what it claims to do
Summary: 5 Stars

Total gap filler. Take theory learned in CCNA add real life and you have this book. If you work with Cisco gear and need a go-to refresher this is it. Great on the job every day book for network admins and engineers, also recommend for anyone who is thinking about CCNP. My new favorite networking book.
