Book Reviews of Neverwhere: A NovelBook Review: Disappointing Summary: 1 Stars
The short of it: creative but,
1. storyline is lame
2. characters are cardboard cut-outs without a hint of personality.
eeek. I loved Stardust. It was such a witty and pleasant fairy-tale. I heard wonderful things about Sandman. I expected an interesting story. In all honestly- it was boring. There was no real point to the story. There is creativity and great ideas, but there is no substance. It is almost like the book is a dumping ground for wonderful ideas, but the chord that ties them together is painfully weak.
The plot, or the reason behind the situation turns out to be so simple, that from the moment the character in question (the one causing the problems) comes in, I figured it out. I told myself: "no, that can't be it, that is too simple. Don't worry, it will pick up. Keep reading".
The ending is painfully anti-climatic. The characters hired to be bad, are bad, and then are hired not to be bad and then are hired to be bad again- it was silly. SMALL SPOLER WARNING: in the beginning he wants her dead, but at the same time he needed her- then why was he ordering her death??? That was never cleared up. Also, Richard's ordeal? That was it?LAME!!
The place is dirty and ugly and yes, like an Alice in Wonderland adventure... but without emotion and with characters who utterly lack personality and who are painfully boring. I just never cared for ANY of them, blaaah :P.
Book Review: Disbelief is Good Summary: 5 Stars
This is a book that one each page, plausibly puts forth another unbelievable experience. Gaiman skillfully created a fantastic world full of impossible possibilities. From people keeping their life hidden to people falling through the cracks. The banter between the arch villains Croup and Vandemar is so light and breezy you forget they are pure evil. The Marquis is a slick, likable, fast talking charlatan. He is equal parts mischief and good and evil. You never know what to expect. Door and Richard are the main characters, and they are built flawlessly with Gaiman's narrative. This is a very enjoyable novel. I got this book because I enjoyed American Gods, I can safely say that this is Gaiman best effort at a Novel to date.

Book Review: Dont typically read this genre but REALLY enjoyed this book Summary: 5 Stars
I found this book on sale for 10 cents at the library, read the back and said to myself, "Not typically the type of book I read but sounds interesting and its only 10 cents. Might as well give it a try." Neil Gaiman is great at what he does. His writing pulled me into this underground world. It was a great read and I'm excited to read his other books.
Book Review: Emotionally flat Summary: 2 Stars
While Neverwhere presents a fascinating premise, the characters who live in this world are emotionally flat. Gaiman creates a world that is so violent and dark that it's completely inexplicable why the main character would abandon all that he knows to permanently enter this world. This decision ultimately reveals the character's utter failure to emotionally connect with anyone in his life, and his decision to leave his world cannot change who he is, only where he will live out the remainder of his lonely and unconnected existence.
Book Review: Enjoyable Book Summary: 5 Stars
My brother gave me this book for christmas and said that some of his friends recomended the author. After starting this book I found that I was greatly enjoying it. Although it was sometimes difficult to keep the realities that they were in straight. Neverwhere is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Having been to London and having been in the area that the book takes place in made it especially appealing to me. The imagery that he uses throughout the book is exceptional. He weaves together a story that keeps you glued to the pages. After having read this book I would recommend it to anyone who wants to read an amazing book.
