Book Reviews of Neverwhere

Book Review: Dark Things Dwell in Dark Places (Spoiler Free Review)
Summary: 4 Stars

A fairytale for grown ups filled with dark humor and dangerous people with bad intentions.

Story:
An ordinary man's life takes a bizarre turn as he helps a battered and bloody girl lying on the street. His simple act of kindness gets him tangled in a web of violence and mystery as he is pursued by supernatural assassins. Before he knows it, his life is turned upside down and he's drawn into the world of 'London Below'.

Writing Style:
Neil Gaiman's writing style is very fun to read. His dark and humorous descriptions will make you laugh, cringe, and maybe check under your bed. The dialogue is great and will entertain you as it brings the characters to life.

Characters:
Richard is the main character. He's an average guy with an average job who spends time with average friends.
Door is a mysterious girl from the world of London Below. She has the magical powers to create doors and open just about anything, including a pathway to another dimension.
Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar are superhuman assassins with exceptional skills.

The characters of this book are all very interesting and drive the story. There is a whole world of characters in London Below that are insanely bizarre and react to the fantastic happenings of the underworld as if it's completely ordinary. The characters and their actions really bring the world to life.

World:
London Above is London.
London Below is not quite London. Instead it's full of magic, beasts, and wicked people. It's kind of a mix between Alice in Wonderland, a trendy nightclub, and the homeless. A myriad of bizarre events occur down there on a daily basis, and that's just the way it is. The world of London Below is fantastic and has concrete rules and consequences which bring it to life.

Action:
There's some action and violence in the book, but this is more of a dark fairytale adventure. It's about a journey through an amazing place.

Maturity:
There's murder, torture, violence, and hints of very bad things. Kids should stick with Harry Potter.

Overall:
This is a fairytale for adults who want to believe that there is more to the ordinary.
This is a good thing because that's why we read fantasy.

Read this book if you want a darker twist to fairytale adventures like Alice in Wonderland, the Matrix, or Harry Potter.

Avoid this book if you're not particularly fond of London, you want more traditional fantasy with castles and dragons, or you're squeamish.
