Book Review: What translation does to a book....
Summary: 4 Stars
I don't know what has happened to Gregory Rabassa,
but Grossman's translation of Garcia Marquez's new
book DO NOT do the book justice. Despite the fact that
the reality of the story does not leave room for the usual
fireworks of whimsey and magic, I picked up the book looking for
those exquisite, loopy, unexpected sentences which are Garcia Marquez's
trade-mark. No luck. Grossman's translation does
no justice to the spiral and whimsical Garcia Marquez language. It's like
throwing in a multi-colored hand-woven shawl into a washing machine
and getting a shrunken, colorless rag back. If you know
Spanish or French, get those editions. If not, read this book only
if you are certain that the stilted and unimaginative
translation won't bore and irritate you.
