Book Reviews of Nicola and the ViscountBook Review: A sad attempt at a Regency novel Summary: 1 Stars
This book can't hold a candle to the other Avons. Those books are full of passion, romance, adventure, and great heroines and heroes. This was a catty, historically inaccurate story with just about the most annoying protagonist on the history of the planet. Lets explain:
The Protagonist: Ohhh...poor old Nicola Sparks. An orphan who manages to live a luxurious lifestyle. She is, for lack of a better word, (sorry for language) a bitch. She is catty and really annoying. Everyone is so jealous of her total perfection. She is a master seamstress, and EVERYONE is dying to wear her clothing. She has perfect skin, and perfect hair. She also, manages to be great a stealing things and spying on people. She gives everyone good tongue lashings, and just seems to speak better than everyone. She is extremely ladylike yet manages to be still somewhat of a tomboy, and in short, is just prettier, braver, smarter, a better sewer than anyone else.
The style: The book is a typical Meg Cabot. The protagonists are catty little control freaks and their friends are just all so in awe of them. She is obsessed with poetry and always expects men to declare their undying devotion to her. The book seems like it was written now, but with historical type words in it and details such as dresses to make it more period.
Yet, it manages to completely butcher the era and make it sound like a frilly, prudish sort of time period where Nicola is the only one who manages to have any modern ideals. From first words, it seems fairly period. The dialogue is alright, the prose could be worse. Then, as you read more into it, it seems to get worse. Nicola, in completely public places, kisses, right in front of everyone, 2, count e'm, 2 boys in the entirety of the novel. Almacks seems like a modern dance club, just with ladies with frilly dresses floating around and everyone saying the word "shall".
This is an utter failure of a book that made me want to just kill the characters as I read more into it. Don't read it or the other Avon by Meg Cabot. She can't write historical.
You want some good Regency Avon True Romance? Go pick up Anna and the Duke. That book is great.
