Book Review: A chilling story of "What if?"
Summary: 4 Stars
First, I should note that I grew up on Dune Road in Westhampton Beach just about 1/4 mile from Cupsogue County Part every summer since 1978. I remember very well the tragic events of Flight 800 almost ten years ago and the aftermath that subsequently occurred. My home was even offered to county police divers during the off-season.
This personal connection with the locale of Nelson DeMille's story is what initially attracted me to read NIGHT FALL. It is the first (and so far, only) book of Demille's that I've read. Beyond that, I have seen the movie, THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER.
The book bases itself not only on the facts of the explosion, but also on the 200 or more eyewitness accounts of a missle being fired from the water. Taking place during the summer of 2001, it becomes undoubtedly clear to the reader (but not to the book's characters) when John Corey's wife Kate says that she can't help but feel that there is a plot brewing on the horizon, that the investigation is headed straight into the belly of September 11, 2001.
Having that historical insight already, it gives the reader a sense of dread as the clock ticks down the final moments when the first plane crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center.
As for the ending, which many readers here have knocked, it genuinely seems to make sense to me. Think about it; what started out as a "What if?" scenerio has the ultimate fate of remaining a "What if?" scenerio forever due to the tragic events of that day. We, as the reader, are destined to never know; because on that horrific day, whatever really happened to Flight 800 had just taken a back seat forever. John and Kate have survived the attack and will go into work as scheduled, with an entirely new priority on their agenda and a whole new state of mind as Americans.
