Book Reviews of Night FallBook Review: He Mailed It In Summary: 1 StarsI had great expectations. I've enjoyed every one of DeMille's prior books, and marvel at how different each was from the others. Night Fall was set in the area where I live; my family had literally heard the explosion which forms the basis of the book. BUT, much to my surprise (and profound disapointment), after you got by the gross and engrossing opening, there was nothing more. All talk, no action. And a cast of characters who kept doing things which made little sense. I hope DeMille hasn't gone lazy 'cause he seems to have coasted on this one.
Book Review: Night Fall below bar set by Esau Swindle Summary: 3 StarsDr.Solde's online review got me reading The Esau Swindle. I'd been looking for a new thriller and checked Night Fall to find out what's hot. Low and behold, The Esau Swindle by Gerald Rothberg popped up. Rothberg's incredible blend of jealous love, mystery, spine chilling suspense, art forgery and greed rocked me. As a physician, I'd been looking for a good book these last few days to clear my mind from daily practice. The Esau Swindle did it. Thank you Dr. Solde. I intend to let other physician's know about this great new page turner.
Book Review: A MUST read! Could be DeMille's best. Summary: 5 StarsOn July 17, 1996 a devastating tragedy occurs...TWA Flight 800 explodes in the air, killing all aboard. On a deserted beach in Long Island Bud Mitchell and Jill Winslow are making love, and videotaping themselves, when the plane explodes. Bud and Jill see the flash across the sky and then the burst of flames, but they can't tell anyone what they saw because they married to other people and have to keep their affair a secret.
Five years later, the crash has been officially declared a mechanical failure, but ex-NYPD detective John Corey thinks differently. John, now working for the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force, decides to help his wife Kate, who happens to also be his task force partner, investigate the crash.
Going against the warnings of their superiors, John and Kate re-open the case and discover a crucial piece of evidence. As the two uncover more shocking information they are thrust into a hunt that will have them exposing a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels, and the truth could have unimaginable consequences for America.
Be prepared to stay up all night with `Night Fall.' From it's explosive opening to the heart-stopping climax this novel thrills. Packed with strong characters and surprising plot twists this powerful novel entertains with an all-too-plausible story-line. Nelson DeMille has a long list of excellent novels to his credit, but `Night Fall' may be his best.
Sharp, intelligent and packed with action `Night Fall' is a MUST read and will dominate the top spot on all the bestseller lists.

Book Review: Stumble and Fall Summary: 2 StarsNelson Demille's latest book is also my last. I've read nearly every book he's written (missing only Cathedral, on purpose) and I find him a hit-and-miss author. Of the three novels featuring John Corey, The Lion's Game was the only hit. Plum Island and now Night Fall are definite misses.
In this third Corey instalment, the author bases his fictional story on real events - an iffy proposition for this reader because I think it's too much of a crutch for the author and because I already know the historical outcome. (An exception is The Day of the Jackal. You know that Charles DeGaulle was not assassinated, but it makes no difference to the plot and pace and pleasure of the story. That is not true here.)
It took me half the book to even begin to be interested in the plot, although other readers might be engaged as early as one-third of the way through. Then, because it's based on real events, many (most?) readers will guess the ending about 100 pages before we get there. In a 500-page novel, that leaves you 150 - 250 pages of sleuthing and wisecracking by Detective Corey, which is sometimes amusing but never rises to the level where it might have justified the long slog.
The only reason I finished reading the book was to be able to confirm that it wasn't very good; otherwise, it's one of those books I could have put down at any point, including the last chapter. If you're a Demille fan, you'll buy it no matter what I say. If you're not, I would suggest one of his other books if you'd like to read this author - The Charm School, The General's Daughter, or Word of Honor come to mind. Looking over the list of his work, I now realize those are the only three I've ever enjoyed.
For me, it is time for a new author or a new effort by Nelson Demille, but I won't be picking up another novel from him without reading a lot of reviews here first.
Book Review: Not his best still but still better than most Summary: 4 StarsThe Wise Cracking yet complex Dective John Cory is back that alone makes this book worth reading! The hero of Lions Game and Plum Island is now working for the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force and investigating the 1996 crash of TWA flight 800. the Crux of the plot is a couple Video tapping themselfs on the beach that night catch tape of a missle hitting the plane. I must admit this book's plot is not as tight as I expect from Demille, but it is worth the price just to get back into John Cory's head. Oh! also Check out "London Bridges"!
