Book Reviews of Night Fall

Book Review: An Excellent "What If" Thriller!
Summary: 5 Stars

Nelson DeMille has been one of my favorite authors since his first book, By The Rivers Of Babylon. With his latest effort, Night Fall, DeMille lives up to his well-deserved reputation as a "must read" author. The basic plot of Night Fall involves an investigation and an alternative conclusion to the official government decision that the crash of TWA flight 800 off the coast of Long Island, NY was something other than an accident. Demille's main character, John Corey, ex-NYPD detective and current member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force, is as irreverent and interesting as they come in fiction today. This is Demille's third, and best, book featuring John Corey; the other two being Plum Island and The Lion's Game. In many ways he reminds me of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch character. Besides Corey, DeMille has created many other well-developed characters that help to keep the suspense and excitement moving at a brisk pace. While some other reviewers found the ending to be contrived, I, on the other hand considered it to be quite fitting (although somewhat predictable). If you're looking for a book that is well-written, very-fast-paced, suspenseful and presents a highly interesting "what if" scenario, Night Fall is a book you shouldn't miss. As you can tell, I have a very favorable opinion of Night Fall. However, Night Fall is not among the best of the best of DeMille's books. My favorite DeMille books -- in rank order -- are Word Of Honor, Gold Coast and Charm School. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy of Night Fall (as well as any of DeMille's books).

Book Review: Another Hit From Demille
Summary: 4 Stars

As a big fan of Demille's "Plum Island" I would rank this his third best book, behind Plum Island and The Gold Coast.

Night Fall marks the return of the always witty, wise-cracking detective John Corey, who was also the main character in Plum Island and The Lion's Game.

I won't go into detail about the story as enough is already mentioned here. I enjoyed reading this book and always look forward to another from Nelson Demille.

I would also recommend: Plum Island, The Gold Coast, The Lion's Game, The Charm School, The General's Daughter, Spencerville and Up Country all by Demille.

Book Review: Another consistent delivery
Summary: 4 Stars

With baseball season about to open, let's just say that Nelson DeMille is the Roger Clemens of contemporary novels. He writes consistently good, engaging stories, with distinctive if stereotypical (good-looking second wife, tough cop, humorous divorced man) characters. Each page of his typical novel is laced with funny, often sarcastic and profane exchanges and thoughts from the protagonist. John Corey is the perfect hero, perhaps Demille's alter ego. Corey is smart, thorough, in pursuit of justice, always working with beautiful women, and funny.

The TWA crash offers DeMille and excellent canvas, and it is no great revealation that he ties in to September 11, 2001, with a five-year later memorial service followed by a convenient absence of the two leading characters for forty-day assignments out of the country, allowing the book to climax on that fateful morning, killing off some characters and wiping out some evidence.

What this book may be best at doing is setting up the next novel, with its unresolved points, its back-from-the-dead CIA agent, and the continuing saga left over from the work that preceded this one. DeMille should have a good time tying together both of these previous works in a third novel.

This is a quick page turner. There is suspense, if too many convenient connections, from the all-powerful ally in the police department, to the heart of gold of the pivotal female character in the book. As my expectation in DeMille's books, I found myself smiling at Corey's jokes, sarcasm, and snide comments, and cringing at his perhaps excessive use of the f-word to color or describe just about everything goo or bad in his life.

Not an acquired taste and not too much of a fantasy for middle-aged men (vis-a-vis the fantasy of Clive Cussler and his Dirk Pitt character). Good, even very good, but not great.

Book Review: Another home run from Nelson DeMille!
Summary: 5 Stars

Do not miss Nelson DeMille's "Night Fall" if fast-pacing, witty dialogue, surprising turns and sophisticated writing wrapped around a conspiracy theory is your cup of tea.

Former NYPD detective John Cory returns. He is now a contract employee for the Anti Terrorism Task Force. Corey is cynical, sarcastic, politically incorrect, self-deprecating, street smart and anti-authority...my type of guy.

Corey's wife, Kate Mayfield (FBI lawyer on the same task force) takes him to a memorial service for the fifth anniversary of the crash of TWA Flight 800.

Corey and Kate are convinced the government arrived at their conclusion too quickly and too conveniently. Corey, always concerned with justice, sets off on his own renegade investigation.

A particularly arrogant senior FBI agent warns Kate and Corey not to question the official version. That ensures that Corey will be relentless in his pursuit of the truth.

Any more would give away too much of this muscular thriller.

Book Review: Another outstanding Demille book
Summary: 5 Stars

You can read the story line written by other reviewers. All I can say is that I throughly enjoyed the characters, the story and the entire book. You wont waste your money if you buy this one.
