Book Reviews of Night FallBook Review: Another page turner Summary: 5 Stars
Without a doubt, DeMille is the greatest writer out there today and I eagerly await his next books. This is another page turner for sure.
It's not his best work (that is unquesionably 'Up Country') but this book never the less has the Corey wit that we have grown to expect.
I agree with earlier reviews that the assigments to Yemen and Tanzania left a void in the book but it did fit into the plot pretty well as you can imagine this happening at the FBI. He chooses not to write dialogue about the 6 weeks absence, rather allowing the reader to imagine an absence, which I did. It also allowed him to connect two important events in a timeline more closely.
This is not his best by far but I enjoyed it thoroughly. There are too many books nowadays that take forever to liven up but this book took off on page one and never stopped.
Book Review: Another winner from DeMille Summary: 5 Stars
Another excellent novel by DeMille. I couldn't put it down once I started it. Excellent storyline-I won't go into it because other reviewers have. DeMille integrates details from the tragedy of TWA 800 very well into the story, and details from 9/11, which indicates what the sequel to this novel may be about. Detective Corey is quickly becoming one of my favorite novel characters, brought so well to life by DeMille. I'm eagerly anticpating the next novel featuring Detective Corey. Overall, a great novel which, along with Plum Island and The Lion's Game, should not be missed.
Book Review: Another winner from a great author Summary: 5 Stars
Nelson Demille has become my favorite writer. Among today's generation of popular fiction authors, he stands out in the crowd. He is not a formula writer and he takes no shortcuts. Reading Grisham is like listening to an early Beatles record... verse - verse - chorus - verse - chorus. Midway through, you know how its gonna end. Demille avoids garden variety convention, develops his characters well, and largely avoids caricatures. His books are so interesting that I am disappointed when they end. I miss them.
Night Fall is a work of art. The book is pure genius and will go down as a Demille classic. Gold Coast, Up Country, Charm School... his list of gems are growing fast.
John Corey is back for the 3rd time. Unlike Plum Island and Lion's Game, John isn't cracking silly jokes every other sentence. His humor is there, but it is more appropriate. We get to see another side of him and it worked great.
Everyone knows the book is about John chasing down witnesses who may or may not have video of TWA flight 800. He uses a lot of fact mixed in with his fiction. Frankly, nobody knows where the line is drawn. For those who didn't like his amazing ending, you must understand he had no choice. He couldn't be so bold as to blow the case open based on his assumptions as a writer, nor could he ignore the discoveries his characters. The end was responsible and clever. He got his message across, all while paying a little tribute to the Twin Towers.
I can't possible recommend this book any harder. Buy it and enjoy. It is a fast read. However, if you haven't read Plum Island and Lion's Game, please start there. If you really want to read Night Fall and only have time for one other book first, go with Lion's Game.
Book Review: Another wonderful (and thought provoking) ride with Corey. Summary: 5 Stars
Ignore the high-pitched, chattering whine of the reviews that give one star and bleat "He'll get no more of my money!!!"
That's okay. Keep your money for more panty-shields, I'll give him mine (sniveling dick-weeds). Plus my new English class is reading 'Plum Island' this fall, so we'll buy lots of books-- 'Lion's Game', too. I love turning my kids on to the joy of reading for pleasure (so few of them do so anymore) and Demille cracks them up.
'NightFall' is a great book and it had the only ending that would work. And it DOES work. If you want complete idiocy and makeshift, tied-up-in-a-bow, alternate universe endings, go read the dreck Tom Clancy writes, ( you know, where he ended up making Jack Ryan president or some fricken' thing...)
Start with 'Plum Island', 'The General's Daughter' or 'The Gold Coast'. This is a gifted writer with something to say and protagonists who's company you can enjoy.
The only bad part of this book? The blurb by Dan Brown on the cover. Mr. Demille created the funny, heroic, and somewhat sad
John Corey, while Brown gave us the self-satisfied smug dink, Robert Langdon, "The Dolphin" *Barf*
(And by the way, Corey could clean Spenser's clock, and Kate is a dream-girl compared to the gag-worthy Susan).
Book Review: Anticipation turned to dissapointment Summary: 3 Stars
I was surprised when I began reading "Night Fall". Since so much was published about flight 800 I could not see how this work of fiction would climax. The closer I came to the conclusion, the more dissapointed I became. Furthermore, John Cory is just not the same guy, now that he's married. This was not a good venue for Det. Cory. I was left with a feeling of being cheated at the end.
