Book Reviews of Night FallBook Review: Another Great Demille book followed by a weak ending Summary: 3 Stars
I'd love to give rave reviews on this book, but unfortunately, I'm very disappointed in the ending... again.
In the Lion's Game, I was let down by the ending that was both lacking in finality and left the reader with a vague idea of what actually happened.
In Night Fall, there is less to leave to the imagination so the ambiguity is not exactly there, but the ending was quite weak. So much drama is built up towards the end and with the climax ultimately starting to peak, and as the reader thinks to themself, how is the protagonist John Correy going to figure out this situation, boom... a major let down.
Also, I noticed that Night Fall builds upon some relationship building that the Lion's Game established. I liked the idea of rewarding a Demille fan with some continuity, but really think it should be noted that the Lions Game should be read first. If the book does offer this suggestion, then I missed it.
Book Review: Author's Betrayal Summary: 4 Stars
Very personable characters especially witty and straightforward John. But, after struggling through pages of technical information re airplane construction and logistics of failures in the air I reached the last few pages in a state of anxiety awaiting the outcome of the meeting at the WTC. There is no clue as to the conspiracy aspects of the downed plane (the choice is left to the reader) and so little has been squashed into the last pages about 9/11 which deserves so much more. But since this was a novel relative to TWA 800 involving so many pages, it is quite unfair just not come up with a plausible solution. Not good for me, Mr. DeMille. "Charm School" is still your most exciting novel.
Book Review: Better than most "Conspiracy Theory" stories Summary: 3 Stars
This was my first Nelson De Mille novel, and I didn't realize at first that John and Kate had appeared previously. Some of the backstory with Ted might put off readers who haven't read De Mille's earlier 'Corey' books.
The story itself was pretty good. The pacing is a little slow at times, and its 'procedural' approach might disappoint readers expecting a bit more action. Moving an established policeman character into an anti-terrorist setting doesn't always work (see James Patterson's Alex Cross joining the FBI), and it took a while for me to really get into that dynamic here.
De Mille's style reminds me of Michael Connelly, an author I've never quite warmed up to. But at least De Mille came up with some complex characters to breathe life into a rather basic story.
The 9/11 connection was rather predictable(frankly, it can be seen coming as early as 'Book Two', when we're told the time of the story has moved forward five years!)
Moving the events of the last chapter to the WTC is a stretch, but not enough of one to destroy the story's credibility, as some have said.
To the reviewers who suggested this is 'alternate history' because 'Corey and Kate aren't real', and who suggested that everything be neatly resolved just before the planes hit the towers: I would suggest that you do a bit of research into what 'alternate history' fiction really is. This book certainly doesn't belong in that genre. Nor was it DeMille's intention to provide a clear-cut ending to the TWA case.
It's a story that could conceivably have happened in 'our' world, and the fact that nothing is resolved is only incidental to the 'new reality' we faced after 9-11. The point is that now we were forced to start addressing the existence of terrorism even more closely than we had prior to 9/11. The references to the Kenya embassy and USS Cole bombings only serve to underscore that, as well-prepared as we thought we were to fight terrorism before 9-11, we really didn't know what to expect until we had it forced upon us.
Book Review: Boring...the worst DeMille I've read yet Summary: 2 Stars
I've read Plum Island, Charm School, and By the Rivers of Babylon all of which I thought were great. Night Fall, however, was a long dragged out boring read. It was very slow. I don't recommend this as a DeMille read.
Book Review: Craziness... Summary: 5 Stars
WOW! This story was amazing. It was sad, frustrating, and happy all rolled into one. The funny thing is, I just finished this book today and about two hours after I had finished it there was a story on CNN about TWA 800. Coincedentaliy I started reading it a week before the ten year anniversary. Was a sad tragity. John Corey is out to find the truth about TWA flight 800. What will the truth bring? Why did TWA flight 800 explode right off of Long Island? John Corey is out to find the truth. Government conspiracy or not he is willing to put his job and life on the line for the victims and families from the aftermath of TWA 800. What really happened on July 17, 1996?
