Book Reviews of Night Fall

Book Review: DeMille & Corey = A Great Combination
Summary: 4 Stars

Night Fall by Nelson DeMille is yet another example of one of the finest authors out there flexing his writing prowess. DeMille has struck gold with the enigmatic John Corey. This "possible" true tale is a gripping story about a potential cover-up. Is it far-fetched? Not really? But DeMille has a great way of making stories ring true. From Cathedral to Wild Fire, any tale that DeMille weaves is generally so well-written that it seems to be non-fiction. I note that there are several complaints by other reviewers about the emptiness they felt over the final chapter(s) in the book. Sometimes things don't wrap up perfectly, and sometimes they do. I encourage readers to take this worthy journey and determine for yourselves if this ending rings true. Enjoy!

Book Review: DeMille Let Me Down
Summary: 3 Stars

John Corey's first adventure, Plum Island, was interesting, and thrilling enough to make me want to try the big Lion's Game which was outstandingly scarey. But, the second book since then has lost it's fire and interest. The ending was trite, unfulfilling and left me ready to say goodbye to John and Kate.

Book Review: Enjoyable Read
Summary: 4 Stars

Nelson DeMille is a very enjoyable writer. I really admired that for the longest time he never had a recurring character. His stories were always fun to read beacuase his characters were always fresh. So now he has a recurring character, John Corey, and I'm happy to say, I like him. He reminds me of many people I know and like, which is probably why he's been dusted off and brought back for the third time. Corey does what everybody only thinks about: tells his bosses to f-off, does his job better than anybody else, gets the good looking babe, doesn't stand down from a tussle, and cracks wise the whole time with a very dry sense of humor.

In this particular novel, he tries to solve the 1996 downing of TWA flight 800 over Long Island. Was it a mishap, terrorists as a precursor to 911, or a government conspiracy? Witnesses swear they saw a streak of light going up to meet the craft. The official version was a spark in an empty fuel cell. The book is fast paced and full of surprises as Corey tries to outsmart the entire Justice Department. For the movie, there's only one guy who could fill Corey's shoes, and that's Dennis Leary.

It's the end of the summer. Take the book to the beach and have a good time.

Book Review: Exploring "history" at Night Fall
Summary: 4 Stars

Night Fall could be classified as an "historical novel" since it explores recent history, namely TWA's flight 800 that exploded 14 minutes after take-off from JFK in New York.

In a change of pace from his previously intricately plotted and lenghty literary thrillers like the Lions Game, here DeMille writes a story that is both energetic and believable and could easily be a CNN news update. Utilizing published accounts and eyewitness interviews as the basis for his story, DeMille has developed an intriguing theory and turned it into an extremely clever and brilliantly crafted tale.

Although some reviewers were less than satisfied with his resolution, but I found it stunning. Read it and decide for yourself. It is worthy of your time and attention.

Book Review: Fantastic!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was one heck of a roller coaster ride! A fantastic story, it kept me reading when most books would allow me time for sleep or work. Wow. I've really enjoyed most of his works, but I must say, this was his BEST!!! Controversial, yes, but then, that's part of what made it so good! Well deveoped story line, well developed characters, some humor, TONS of tension. What else could one possibly ask for in a book?
