Book Review: A great setting, great start, but it's all downhill from there.

I'd heard Follet's name a bit, so when Night Over Water showed up in the local discount bin, I gave it a try. I should know that nothing good ever comes from the discount bin.
As an aviation buff and a fan of the era, I have to say that the setting is well-researched and very intriguing. I think also thought (unlike some other reviewers) that Follet managed to keep the story consistently plotted and moving along nicely. After a chapter or two, I was very excited about this book. But the characterizations eventually ruined it for me. The people are all two-dimensional cardboard cutouts, given to whiplash changes in attitudes and intentions. The only predictable trait? No matter what happens, the women all remain the sort of libido-driven sexual bobcats that exist only in the wishful fantasies of heterosexual males. By the time the gangsters show up and start spouting every offensive four-letter word known to man, for no apparent reason other than to show how mean and nasty gangsters can be, my interest in the book was almost nill. I finished it, but my enthusiasm for the story had long-since waned.
The drama inherent in a mid-century transatlantic crossing aboard the most luxurious flying boat ever built could be the basis of an absolutely magical story. But this one isn't it.
