Book Reviews of Night Probe!Book Review: Dirk Pitt, Superhero Summary: 5 Stars
Any fiction book written by Clive Cussler has a place in my library. His Dirk Pitt character is an interesting hero as well as his other characters. I love his intricate plots and the way he pulls them all together. Night Probe is my favorite of his books that all seem to become slightly more unbelievable as they progress.
Book Review: Engrossing...Enjoyable... Wonderful action and detail. Summary: 5 Stars
I have always loved the way that Clive starts his stories with a distant event or tragedy, and then brings it to modern times. Night Probe offers two distant disasters that are somehow related. It's up to Dirk Pitt, Clive's main character, (and you) to solve the puzzle.I thought I had the mystery solved, (especially the missing train... just where is that thing hiding?) but one by one my guesses came up empty. I think I figured it all out about five seconds before Dirk did. (So, I did out-guess him, right?) It takes an exceptional author to pull that off. And Clive knows how to keep the reader happy. This book has ranked as one of the top ten books I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. (Of course, a lot of Clive's work is in my top ten.) Night Probe is a wonderful start to anyone just discovering Cussler's writing, or, if you've read his latest, exploring Dirk's past
Book Review: Entertaining but... Summary: 3 Stars
I'm a huge fan of the Dirk Pitt series but the storyline for Night Probe was a bit too far-fetched for me. First of all, Britain doesn't "own" Canada so the concept of Britain "giving away" Canada to the U.S. or anyone else seems a bit silly. Then, there's a reference in the book to the U.S. winning the war of 1812. Hmmm. Perhaps Clive should watch the history channel a bit more. The U.S. may have won a battle that was fought technically outside the scope of the war due to communication delays in those days but hadn't the Brits already technically won the war after the U.S. sued for peace and signed the treaty of Ghent?
Book Review: Entertaining read, but lacking typical Cussler action Summary: 3 Stars
Dirk Pitt fans will enjoy this adventure even though their hero is a bit more bookish and reflective than he typically is in other adventures. The book could have benefited from a little more Al Giordino.
Cussler's use of a naval officer's historical research as part of her doctoral program to provide some backstory information was well done (but she was a friend of Dirk's). Learning the importance of the North American Treaty and the implications it could have for a long-hatched plot between Canadian and American politicians through this mechanism seemed to work even though it seems a stretch. Cussler made us believe it.
The primary disappointment was the lack of action in this book compared to previous Cussler works. I enjoyed it and it's still worth reading, but be prepared for a different Cussler experience than you typically find.
Book Review: Excellent! Summary: 5 Stars
This was a most fascinating book! From page 1 until the end, Clive Cussler keeps you turning those pages - I could not put this book down and read it in 3 days. Every chapter ending pushed you right into the next until you just could not keep your eyes open anymore or you experienced double vision from constant reading! Clive Cussler takes you into Dirk Pitt's world and doesn't let go! A must read for the fiction addicted!
