Book Reviews of Night Witch

Book Review: The best thing about this book was its cover
Summary: 1 Stars

I don't like posting negative reviews; writing is hard work, and even if I don't like the book, I respect the effort the author put into creating it. Unfortunately, Night Witch reads like an unedited manuscript dashed off during National Novel Writing Month. The writing is sloppy and lazy. There is endless back-and-forth dialog designed to fill pages as opposed to advancing the story. As for the characters...well, paper dolls have more depth. Worst of all (especially for a horror book), it's BORING. The only thing scary about Night Witch is its cover price. Thank goodness I bought it used and only wasted $5.

Book Review: Thrill your Senses
Summary: 5 Stars

"Night Witch" kept me awake at night and had me hearing noises that weren't there and thinking that I saw things moving outside the windows... In short, "Night Witch" scared the daylights out of me. Of course, this is a good thing as I am always searching out books to scare and thrill and get my blood pumping! If you are looking for a good read that will get your mind working in overdrive and thrill your senses, pick up "Night Witch"!

Book Review: Two Kids are in Trouble Deep with a Monster Extraordinaire
Summary: 5 Stars

I really like the way Jack Priest goes out of his way to come up with new and original type monsters. In RAGGED MAN he came up with an Australian Aboriginal spirit demon that takes over someone's body, turning them evil and staying till they die, when it jumps to a new body. In GECKO he sort of amplified a New Zealand Maori legend and came up with a gecko monster that sort of shape shifts from a normal sized gecko to a giant buffalo sized thing with yellow eyes and fiery breath. And in this one, NIGHT WITCH, he takes another legend and turns it into something you surely don't ever want to run into in a back alley on a dark night. A Soucouyant is sort of like an old hag vampire from Trinidad who changes into some pretty ugly stuff when she's mad.

The old hag is mad at young Carolina Coffee and her chubby pal Arty. Carolina's father has stolen her locket, a device that gives the Soucouyant immortality, and given it to his daughter. Of course her dad didn't know what he was stealing when he took it when he was on vacation in Trinidad. He thought is was just a cheap trinket. Now the Soucouyant has followed him back to California and is willing to do anything to get it back. And I was up all night, like with Jack Priest's other books, reading away, to see just how bad things could get for Carolina and Arty, because not only are they in trouble deep with a monster extraordinaire, but they are being picked on by bullies at school and sometimes that seems just as bad as the evil that wants to consume them. This is a very good thriller, as good or better than Priest's other books and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I know you will not be disappointed with NIGHT WITCH.

Book Review: Two Tough Kids vs. One Big, Bad Caribbean Meanie
Summary: 5 Stars

Carolina Coffee is one tough little girl. She has to be, she has a soucouyant after her. What is a soucouyant, you say? You don't know? Well, I guess I can understand that. According to the back cover off the book she (the soucouyant) is the second cousin to the vampire. She's like an old hag who can change into some pretty nasty things. And she's immortal, at least as long as she has her locket, she is. Carolina's father, not knowing the locket's power, stole it and gave it to his daughter and this big, bad meanie from the Caribbean wants it back.

At first Carolina and her gravitationally challenged friend Arty don't understand what's behind those red eyes that stare in Carolina's bedroom window. They just know it's bad news. But it'll be good news for you if you try out this super book. You'll learn a lot about the Caribbean legend of the soucouyant. You'll meet a couple of tough, but very likable kids, you'll also meet Carolina's pet ferret (Carolina gets mad at her father and attaches the locket to the ferret's name tag, thus making it impossible for the soucouyant to find). You'll meet Carolina's dad and her school teacher Sara. You'll meet the bully who antagonizes Arty and Carolina and you'll meet one very wise old American Indian who knows stuff most mortals have never even dreamed about. And lastly, you'll be up all night with this story or my name isn't Veronica Dream. Well, it isn't really Veronica Dream, but you know what I mean.

Book Review: Very Good Chilly-Whilly, Scary Story
Summary: 5 Stars

"Night Witch" is about a young girl named Carolina Coffee. Her father is a small time housebreaking criminal. When he is on vacation in Trinidad he steal the locket that belongs to an old woman. However, what he didn't know is that the old woman is a soucouyant, sort of a vampire, shape changing bad old woman who can live forever because of the magic locket she wears around her neck. This soucouyant can change into real bad things. She's a bloodsucker and she likes to sow terror, because she gets off on fear. Carolina's dad doesn't have much use for the locket, so he gives it to his daugter. Now guess who wants it back. Brrr, this is a very good chilly willy kind of story with characters I just loved. I loved the story a whole great big bunch and I think you will too.
