Book Review: Bullying, as with all forms of abuse is a no-win situation

A seventeen year old bullied kid puts his foot down one day and shoots up the whole school. But with every crime there are consequences. The book instantly draws the reader in with that first scene but then jumps back and forth to examine the events and possible explanations leading up to (and after) the incident. Picoult's depiction of the characters backgrounds accurately predicts their behavior and decisions. This book starts off on a very fast pace but soon slows down to allow the reader several glimpses into each character's personality, how they deal with the tragedy and how each may or may not have played a part in its occurence, whether by remaining ignorant or simply uninformed. There are several other underlying messages like society's unspoken rule about the masks we sometimes wear to get through each day and the illusions we allow ourselves to create. There is a love story as well and several exciting suprises towards the end.
I began reading this book after a local library featured it as their monthly book club discussion. I recall another member saying they felt a bit depressed and had to put it down at one point, honestly so did I. It was overall a bit long and drawn out(that's why I gave it three stars) but for anyone who's ever asked WHY of the Columbine HIgh or Virgina Tech shootings this book is worth the emotional roller coaster ride.
