Book Reviews of No Angel

Book Review: Historical fiction at its best
Summary: 4 Stars

Penny Vincenzi's "No Angel" drops you into the early 1900s and makes you sympathize with the characters to such an extent that you feel you are there with them. This is historical fiction at its best -- when the reader can live alongside characters of the times. It makes the history come alive.

But "No Angel" is more than just a history lesson. It's a great tale, well-told. It reminded me of both The Forsyte Saga and Elizabeth Jane Howard's wonderful series about the Cazelet family before, during, and after World War II.

My only complaint is not with the author or the story, but with the proofreader. My copy of the book seems to have numerous typos in it. However, it is a measure of how engrossing this story is that I brushed past those.
I highly recommend this book to readers.

Book Review: Loved It!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love all three of her books in this trilogy. I found the first two in the public library but ended up buying all three hardcovers from Amazon - just so I can loan them out. Her writing is very unique. The characters are fully developed and multi-faceted,as in real life, you realize that one is never completely evil or a complete saint. Ms Vincenzi has a way of starting off a paragraph with dialogue and you're not immediately sure who is talking or what the context is - very fast moving and addictive. I really didn't have time to read this right before Christmas - I'm behind in my shopping now.

Book Review: Shame on the publisher
Summary: 4 Stars

I must chime in along with others who have noted that the number of typographical and grammatical errors in this book is simply shameful. I counted five errors on just two pages. This really distracted from what should have been a delightful read. Editors: step up!

Book Review: The Literary Equivalent of a Soap Opera
Summary: 2 Stars

If you're looking for "love in the afternoon" this is the book for you. If however you're looking for well-written historical fiction, you'll be disappointed by Penny Vincenzi. "No Angel" is just the sort of thing one might consider reading while on holiday, or recovering from surgery -- if you can get past the anachronistic but stylish front cover and horrendous editing (typos, words missed, etc.) The poor editing is especially ironic considering the book is a saga about a family's publishing business and frequently references the protagonist's fine qualities as an editor!

Overall, I found "No Angel" quickly forgettable.

Book Review: The must read trilogy of a lifetime.
Summary: 5 Stars

These three novels( No Angel, Something Dangerous and Into Temptation)are so completely engrossing it"s not even funny.Like a box of fine godiva chocolates ,you want to nibble and savor every bite, but can't stop yourself from gorging on them.I was absolutley engrossed in these novels.I'm on a mission to read more of her books, but they are actually quite hard to find. From what I understand she seems to be more popular in the UK and Aus. I can hardly believe we've been missing out on some of the most fabulous writing ever to be put on paper. Bravo! Penny!! I'll be back for everything I can get my hands on.!
