Book Reviews of No, David!

Book Review: Concerns about modeling negative behaviors
Summary: 3 Stars

My 3 1/2 year old son is ADHD and extremely impressionable. He frequently copies inappropriate behaviors. I thought he might identify with David in a positive way, (David certainly seems to fit the profile!) and I liked the final message of unconditional love. Unfortunately, my son keeps referring to David's antics and tells me how he wants to do things David does (like draw on the walls). He gets such a thrill out of seeing David's behaviors that we had to nix the book. So if you're the parent of an ADHD child considering the book for the same reason I did, I would not recommend it.

Book Review: Core Curriculum for Preschoolers
Summary: 5 Stars

I found No, David! three years ago while teaching a special education class for preschoolers with Austism. I was certain that I would receive a response from reading this book to them, as how many times are they told "NO"! Being a speech language pathologist I did expand on the dialog, saying what David was doing wrong. The students would paraphase the dialog with the same intonation or melodic intonation (scolding) I had used. We even wrote books about No, David!, doing inappropriate acts in our class room. It's amazing how well this book worked as a "social story". Many bad habits were reduced. Best of all, when I read "Come here, David" my students would come up to get a hug. This was the most verbally requested book from my students with Autism. At reading free choice, they would look at the pictures and preread using the dialog. I currently run a preschool special education preschool program for children with speech, language, and learning delays and start off the Fall reading No, David to decrease bad social behaviors. My students 3.0 to 5.0 love this book. I also give this book as a baby present.

Book Review: Cute Story
Summary: 5 Stars

I was surprised to read the author wrote the basis of this story as a kid. It's the writings of a child who drew pictures of things he is not supposed to do. As he mentions No and David were the only words I could spell.

It's a cute story overall with good artwork. I think my daughter likes it. But I think she only likes the picture of David sprinting down the street naked.

Book Review: David Strikes Again...
Summary: 5 Stars

"No, David" is such a favorite with my 18 month old daughter that she will request it over abd over and over again. We finally have to say no to David ourselves and put the book away! She loves watching and reading about David getting into trouble-- and has actually stopped herself from doing similar things by saying, "No David!).

Book Review: David is Great!
Summary: 5 Stars

The No, David! books are my 2 year old daughter's favorite books. We have to read No, David! and David Goes to School at least 6 times a day. She has No, David! memorized and will "read" along with us. I don't understand the negative reviews from some parents who claim that their children are picking up bad habits from these books. It's a pretty simple concept, books are pretend, in real life, you don't do that. Even a 2 year old understands that. My older two kids like the books as well. This was the first book that my 6 year old read on her own, to her sisters. The words are simple for early readers, and the pictures are amusing to most kids (except perhaps for the super sensitive, highly suggestible children who can't understand the concept of pretend and real).
