Book Reviews of No Jail for Thought

Book Review: The Red Army in Prussia, Aftermath of the Warsaw Uprising, etc.
Summary: 4 Stars

Lev Kopelev is best known for his description of the conduct of the Soviet Army upon its entry into East Prussia. (However, accounts of Soviet atrocities should not be confused with baseless claims of 2 million or so German civilians killed in such reprisal atrocities, and the later expulsions).

When the Soviets took the first Prussian villages, Gross-Koslau and Klein-Koslau, the German civilians fled, and the Soviets set fire to the villages for no military reason. (p. 37). Some of them verbalized statements of revenge. Kopelev, on the other hand, dichotomized Germans and Nazis, and praised the cultured Germans of the past. (pp. 84-85). Stalin was quoted as saying that "Hitlers came and went, but the German people were eternal." (p. 84).

Kopelev later met Tadeusz Ruzanski, who touched on the Warsaw Uprising and elaborated upon its aftermath. (pp. 95-97). Even though the captured Polish fighters were recognized as combatants, the wounded were shot, and the remainder was treated as poorly as Russian POWs. The Warsaw fighters were guarded by Germans and Ukrainian SS from the `Volyn' Division, poorly fed, and often beaten. Later, they were suddenly fed well, armed, and sent to fight the upcoming Russians. Instead of doing this, this 30-man platoon disarmed the Germans and greeted the Red Army. Despite this, Tadeusz Ruzanski and his men were accused of fighting for the Germans. He was sentenced to 8 years' imprisonment, and his comrades to 8-15 years.
