This is a timely investigation into the way commerical brands are gradually trying to colonise every aspect of our public, private and even psychological space. It sheds light on the motivation of international brand manufacturers whose only aim is the extension of the brand and whose only resposibility is to greedy shareholders.It gives case after case of mega-brands such as Nike, Shell and McDonalds who spend millions in aggressively marketing their product while slashing production costs by contracting the work out to criminal sweatshops in under-developed countries. The reader comes to realise that the companies are exploiting everyone in their quest to boost profits and their brand image.
Klein offers a hopeful picture though, by reporting on the activites of so-called "culture-jammers", dedicated to subverting the brand's image and the growing number of conscientious consumers who are helping to pop the bubble that mega-brands keep trying to pump fuller.
This is astonishingly good journalism, impassioned writing on a trend that affects us more and more. Naomi Klein deserves a huge audience with this book.
