Book Review: "I wish you were dead!"

When Cynthia, a young girl that had just been embarrassed by her parents, shouted the words in the title of this review, she never imagined that the next morning, when waking up, her whole family would have disappeared. That is how this fast-paced thriller starts, and after that, the author makes sure of not letting out attention go until the final pages. He does this through a combination of fascinating characters, many twists and turns, but without it being over the top, and an expertly crafted mystery.
When a friend recommended this book to me a couple of months ago, I grudgingly promised I would give it a try. I was not familiar with the author, and this is not one of those friends whose literary opinion I trust too much. However, when I read the comments in the back cover, and found out that two of my favorite authors, Peter Robinson and Joseph Finder, praised this work, I was already expecting a great read. I was not disappointed in the least, and read the whole thing in a couple of days, forcing myself to put it down so as not to be dead tired at work the following day.
I have had many experiences in which an author presents a mystery that is baffling, but then, when all is said and done, the explanation came completely out of left field. That is not the case here, and even though at points I said to myself that it looked like Barclay was going to have to resort to some kind of esoteric explanation, I was mistaken. It all makes sense and in this cleverly-crafted plot. Anyone that likes the genre will be thrilled and amazed by this book. Highly recommended.
