If you've read A Wild Sheep Chase or Hardboiled Wonderland (both available in Britain in the early nineties) you've probably been waiting for the moment when this, Murakami's bestselling book in Japan, finally clawed its way into print over here. I managed to get an English translation (a perfectly good one too, by Birnbaum) from a Japanese friend (it's published in English over there as a college text for English students). These two little books (for some reaon it's published in 2 volumes) have been passed around all my friends: every one agrees -- it's an astonishing novel. All the themes of the other books are there -- disengagaement from society, lost love, bizarre jobs, cats that are named after fish -- but somehow there is even more depth to this one. In much the same way as in Wind-Up he luxuriates in telling the story at his own pace, meandering off on what seem like obscure tangents before drawing all the threads together. That's another point -- it's by far his most complete book and, just to prove he can do it, he's written about the best last line I've ever seen. When it finally appears (only a decade and a half late, after all), you have to buy this book.
