Book Review: Nory Ryan's Song
Summary: 5 Stars

I want you to read this book because it is an adventure! It's about a ten year old girl named Nory Ryan, who lived in Ireland in the time of the great famine. Nory lives with her two sisters, her brother Patch and her granda. They're being ruled by Lord Cunnigham, who took their land and treats them very poorly. Because their lives are full of many worries they dream of going to America. It's an exciting book and I really liked it! Hope you enjoy it too!

Summary: 3 Stars

Nory Ryan's Song is about a girl who lives on the west coast of Ireland in Maidin Bay with her family in 1845. It's very beautiful there. But life there isn't easy. Nory's family plants potatoes there for a living. Nory's dad sailed away on a boat to go fishing to earn rent money for Lord Cunningham. The English lord forced the Irish to leave their land, so he can tear down their cottages and clear fields for sheep. Many people left Maidin Bay, and never returned. Nory's sister Maggie set off for Brooklyn. Nory dreams where all the Ryan's would live together as a family. A blight attacks the potatoes, which means everybody will go into starvation. And Nory's dad doesn't return when he usually does. Nory has to use courage and ingenuity to find food, find hope, and a way for her family to survive.

Summary: 4 Stars

Nory Ryan is just twelve years old, living in Maidin Bay, Ireland in 1845. An English lord collects rent from the small village of long-time potato farmers. Nory's sister just married and sails away to America. Her father is still out to sea fishing. One morning, Nory awakes to a smell in the air and wonders where the stench could be coming from.

It was the poatoes. They were black and oozing with disease. Now the family has no resources to pay the rent nor any food to eat. Nory is left by her other sister and grandfather who go to look for her father. Nory is left with the responsibility of raising her three-year-old brother. With the potatoes rotting, there would be no crops or income. The lord's men would take all of the food and livestock as payment for the rent, leaving the village people with nothing. Nory soon finds a friendship in a very unexpected person, the healing woman, Anna. She is elderly and she begins to teach Nory her art of healing. All of the food is gone and Nory is the only one left healthy enough to get out of bed, although she is still starving. Soon, Nory must take on finding food for her baby brother and her elderly friend, Anna. She risks her life to hang over cliff edges and gather bird eggs.

Nory is a strong, resourceful young girl who goes to great lengths to provide for those she holds dear to her heart. She is independant and strong and she does not waiver to get justice for her loved ones. She makes a deal with the English lord so that Anna can have her dog back. The theme of this book is strong family bonds help spiritual and physical survival. And Nory finds strength in the people she loves.

"One to be sad, two to be glad, and Three to get married" that is a saying that they said when birds were flying overhead. This story takes place in 1845, and was about a girl who lived in Maiden Bay, Ireland and man named Lord Cunningham owned the village that her and her family lived in and they had to pay rent on their houses or they would be kicked out and their houses burned down. This story is a realistic fiction book.

I thought this book was ok because it was interesting seeing how they had to survive but the author I think kept rambling on. She kept repeating things and would say in one sentence then would say again right away in another. People would like this book is people who like easy books and an age group of 11 to 13. I think it was a page turner because it was kind of sad how this was happening and people kept on taking things away from them and it was interesting how they survived it. I think I connected to the sister Celia because after Maggie left she had to be like the mother since hers had died and I do that for my siblings as well. A surprise in this story was when Nory had just got enough money to pay for the package from the post office some man stole it from her and she just totally forgot about and she knew she had to get back up and get on without it.

Book Review: Nory Ryan's Song a review by Amanda
Summary: 4 Stars

"Nory, I'm moving to Smith St. Brooklyn, New York."

Have you ever had to leave somewhere you love because it was not safe for you anymore? Well, if you have, Nory Ryan's Song by Patricia Reilly Giff is a story you can relate to. Around 1818, the English were taking over parts of Ireland. The taxes were coming due, and Papa still had not come home with the money. Will they be able to pay the taxes or not? Find out if Nory's family moves or pays their taxes. This book is great and Nory actually dealt with these problems. I highly encourage you to read Nory Ryan's Song, to find out if anything happens to her or her family. It is an excellent book that actually happened to a girl who lived in Ireland.
