Book Review: "One" to Forget
Summary: 1 Stars
The previous 11 Jack Reacher have all been first rate. There's no reason author Lee Child has lost his mojo, so let's just pretend this one never happened.
No end of problems with it...
OVERBLOWN: Easily 100 pages too long. Lots of padding. It just kept going and going and going...
LITTLE ACTION: Reacher punches a guy. He grabs a gun from a cop. He wrecks a police car. He beats up six guys in a bar. He beats up two guys, one of whom is bigger than he is. Oh, there's a lot of vague sneaking around at night, but that's all the action in the book.
BELIEVABILITY: Child is a Brit who usually "gets" America, or at least offers a unique outsiders take on things. But this time, all we get is an elitist's cartoon version of middle America.
AUTHENTICITY: Usually good, but often hit-or-miss with Child. Sometimes he is totally accurate; sometimes he just makes stuff up. This book falls disproportionately into the latter category. He veers quickly from the usual, "Jeez, this could actually happen," into, "Man, this is ridiculous!"
POLITICS: Just a bad idea. Politics don't belong with Jack Reacher; Reacher is a funhouse mirror upon which we project ourselves.
PLOT: I thought the extra length of the book was to tie up all the loose ends. Wrong. Most of what we get for plot resolution is just Reacher stating what he guesses things to be. Multiple plots, which are never tied together or explained.
CLIMAX: Without giving away a spoiler, if you make it though to the bitter end you're going to be shocked -- by the stupdity or irresponisibility or lack of believability or authenticy with which Child chooses to end his novel.
Hopefully, this was just a step off the path, and we'll return to the usual with the next adventure.
