Book Reviews of Number the StarsBook Review: A Perfect Story about the Holocaust! Summary: 5 Stars
Lois Lowry is simply becoming one of my favorite authors. This book can be read by both adults and children. It should be encouraged reading and discussion in the family home. The story about the Holocaust is told often enough. For young children, this novel is adequate in detailing the plight of the Danish Jews who were mostly fortunate enough to escape the perils of the concentration camps and crematories. The relationship between a Danish Lutheran girl, Anne Marie Johansen, and her best friend, Ellen Rosen (a Danish Jewish girl), is believable. I would put this book as a must read and highly suggest this book in the classroom for the middle school and possibly high school. The Holocaust is a tough subject because it is overwhelming emotionally and psychologically and sometimes a novel like this would be suffice in some classrooms to help understand the difficult situations that everybody in Europe faced during World War II.
Book Review: A Review of a Great Book: Number the Stars Summary: 5 Stars
We read this book in a reading group in fifth grade. Since it is such a great book we read it again in the seventh grade. This book was a great book yet it was very sad to learn how some people struggled during that time. This book teaches on how you should cherish the things you have and not take them for granted. It showed how people were treated back then during the war. It toled of how Hitler treated the Jewish people even though they never even did anything. It was a great book and taught us a lot of the values of life as in the book all the people had to deal with all deaths of family and friends looking forward to their own death as well. We recommend this book to everyone because it can teach everyone a thing or two.
Book Review: A Simple but Moving Story Summary: 4 Stars
This is a moving story ~~ written simply for the younger audience and it's perfect for all ages who want to remember the lost and the forgotten of World War II. This is a simple story of "What Should You Do?" in times like this ~~ where the Jews are forced underground or to leave their homes. This is a story of a young girl who delivered a life-saving package to her uncle who was about to be boarded on his fishing boat by the Germans. He was smuggling his niece's friends and other people to Sweden.
It is a simple story ~~ there are other stories out there that are better written and more well-rounded but this is a perfect start for young kids who want to learn more about history. It's written beautifully and simplistically and yet realistically. It is a story of courage and defiance and strength even in moments of sheer terror. It is a story that honors the old commandent: "Thou Shall Love Thy Neighbors."
It is a must-read for all serious readers.

Book Review: A Story about a Brave Girl in Denmark Summary: 4 Stars
Number the Stars is a book of historical fiction by the author Lois Lowry. The theme is about how a young girl learns to be brave by saving her best friend's family who are Jewish. The Nazis try and round up all the Jews in Denmark and take them to concentration camps, but some of the Christians help them escape to Sweden. Readers know this because the story is told by Annemarie, the young girl, and she tells us about her thoughts. The setting of the story is in Denmark during World War II. It begins in 1943 when the Nazis have taken over Denmark, and ends two years later when the war stopped.
The plot of the story is about how the Nazis are rounding up the Jews, but some Christians are helping them escape. The Johansen family is Christian and they are helping their best friends the Rosens. They take them to Annemarie's uncle's house along with other Jews pretending to have a funeral. Then, Annemarie's mom takes the Rosens to Uncle Henrik's fishing boat where they hide while Henrik will sail them to Sweden. But, they forgot to bring an important packet, so Annemarie bravely delivers it. When soldiers stop her, she has to pretend that she is nothing more than a silly little girl. At the end of the war all the Jews come back to Denmark, including the Rosens, and they celebrate.
The main character is Annemarie. The important characters are Ellen, Annemarie's mom, the Rosens, Peter, and uncle Henrik, who are working together to help Jews. The Nazi soldiers are also important to the story, because they hinder the characters.
I really like this book, because the author describes what's happening very well, so it feels like you're in the story. The best part was when Annemarie pretended to be a silly little girl to get past the soldiers in order to deliver the package. I would definitely recommend this book to friends. Also I think that other books from the author would interest me. My overall opinion is that Number the Stars is a great book. The most important thing I would want other people to know is that sometimes normal people have to be brave and take big risks.
