Book Review: A Personal Recollection of LIfe in Pre-WWII Poland

This work is autobiographical in approach. The author lived in a village--a Polish island in a sea of Ukrainians--near Luck (Lutsk). Almost all of the local commerce was in the hands of Jews, and there were only a handful of Polish-owned shops. (p. 8).
Some historically-significant events are mentioned, such as the grief following the death of Pilsudski in 1935. (p. 113). We learn that the annexation of Zaolza (Trans-Olza) by Poland, during the Nazi dismemberment of Czechoslovakia, drew sizeable Polish protests. (p. 164).
There are many photographs and paintings included of the rural life in prewar Wolyn (Volyn). They alone make the book worthwhile.
The author left Volyn soon after the Soviet invasion of eastern Poland. He moved to central Poland, thereby avoiding the Soviet deportations and the Ukrainian fascist-separatist OUN-UPA genocide against Poles.
