Book Reviews of Off SeasonBook Review: What is up with this ending? Summary: 2 Stars
Ok. I always like a good suprise ending, but I expect that even though they are suprising that they are still believable. This book's ending is a suprise but not believable and is a big disappointment. I think she is setting her reader up for something she can not deliver and decides to through in a twist instead. This book left me totally bitter and frustrated. For an experienced writer such as Anne Siddons, I expected more.
Book Review: What's the mystery? Summary: 4 Stars
SPOILER ALERT -- come on, folks! It's pretty plain what happened at the end of this book. Hubby had an ongoing affair with Wifey's spiteful girlhood Nemesis, whom he had met while alone -- off season -- at the couple's summer place in Maine. The sight of the lookalike son his mistress bore him so shocks Wifey when she meets him years later -- also off-season -- that she drops dead on the spot. She then wakes on the other side in the arms of her true love -- who is NOT her cheating dog of a husband but a boy who drowned when she eleven years old and has been her guardian spirit ever since. The end.
It's a nicely written book overall. But I agree with some reviewers that the kitty was a bit much.
Also, writerly tics are setting in -- why does every ARS book seem to have a white-blond dreamboat and scads of redheads? An irrepressibly, pointlessly evil woman? A supposedly loving but unfaithful husband? Blacks who talk like Mammy in "Gone With The Wind"? Down-Easters who sound as though they just crawled out of some Stephen King trailer park but nonetheless say "you-all" like Southerners? Endless references to BO and other malodorous emissions? And why does the present lead character have a name straight out of "Colony" but seems unrelated to those particular Potters and Constables?
These are the things that mystify me. Too bad because otherwise, the lady can certainly write!
Book Review: Wonderful book Summary: 5 Stars
There are some books that after the first chapter, you think, "Ahh, this is going to be a good book." And it was. A very good book. Good and well fleshed out characters, nicely paced plotting and some relevations that make you go back to read certain parts again. I laughed and cried and nodded my head several times during the reading of this book. Well done Mrs. Siddon!
Book Review: Wrong Title...... Summary: 2 Stars
This book should have been titled 'Off Reason". Until the last 20 or so pages I enjoyed following this family, even though I thought a talking cat and love at first sight at age 11 a bit hard to swollow. But, the ending was coming up and I wondered where she could possibly take us. How about Outer Space. She is SO consistantly good that I find it hard to believe these characters and THAT ENDING were from her head. The only ghost not in the book was the name of the writer.
Book Review: a story of strength Summary: 4 Stars
This book started out in a different direction but landed up being A Woman's Book of courage and strength. I really enjoyed reading it. Author has a way of pulling it all together. I always enjoy Anne Rivers Siddons books and this one was also worth reading.
