Book Review: A Decent Modern Take on Greek Mythology

Oh. My. Gods. is definitely a good book, I will not deny that. However, when compared to the Percy Jackson series, the overwhelming light of Jackson dims the bulb that is Oh. My. Gods. The story of Phoebe Castro is quite engaging. Child does an excellent job of incorporating the decedents of Greek Mythology into a modern day, high school. This is a very light, fun read.
However, the plot of the story moves a bit too fast. The characters aren't allowed a great deal of character development and the pace of the drama within the novel makes the story somewhat unrealistic. Some of the character relationships seem superficial: novel relationships rather than human understandings.
The running aspects of the novel are beautifully done. The passages of Phoebe's running experiences truly engage readers and evoke a desire for that amount of freedom and passion. In the end, this novel must be taken for what it truly is: a light, fun read. Greek Mythology is never old and this modern interpretation is amusing, at least.
I would not recommend this to a person looking for a serious book or a student attempting to learn about the Greek gods while avoiding The Iliad; however, to those looking for an entertaining, light book, Oh. My. Gods. is an excellent read.
