Book Reviews of Old Man's War

Book Review: A treasure!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book knocked me out - it was well-written, imaginative and thoughtful. It has all the creativity, intellectual and philosophical issues that are captured by the best SF, plus superb action and adventure. Moreover, it has wonderful lead characters, who were embued with real emotions, in addition to some great humor, and complex plot resolutions, all of which I enjoyed. I found myself thinking about the issues raised by this book and whether I would make the choices made by the protagonists.

Book Review: A very fun book
Summary: 4 Stars

This book was very fun to read. It has been a while since I read a book that made me care about the characters as mush as this book did.

The book is basically a fun retelling of Heinlein's Starship Troopers. As much as that last line sounds like an accusation of plagiarism, let me assure you that is not my intent. Where Heinlein's story was a vehicle for lectures on society, this one is a story about the characters. The book goes in a totally different direction and accomplishes its goal quite well.

Book Review: A++ Hard SF
Summary: 5 Stars

I have little to add to the many other positive reviews of this book, other than to thank the reviewers themselves. I was browsing through a discussion of good science fiction and Scalzi's "Old Man's War" came up with a solid recommendation, so I bought and read the book.

Very reminiscent of Dickson's "Tactics of Mistake" Tactics of Mistake (Childe Cycle) or Haldeman's The Forever War. Scalzi openly recognizes his debt to Heinlein . Protagonist John Perry is perhaps a variation on Lazarus Long but is certainly no copy. Very enjoyable straightforward hard SF.

Thanks again to the other reviewers for pointing this out! Recommended!

Book Review: Absolutely Incredible
Summary: 5 Stars

I wont bore you with a long review. All I will say is that this is one of the finest Military Science Fiction books that I have ever read, and I believe it rivals 'Armor' and 'Starship Troopers' as my all time favourite of that particular genre.

Book Review: Aces
Summary: 5 Stars

Just a really good homeworld kinda sci-fi story. Easy techno stuff, great lead character. makes you want to be green.
