Book Reviews of Old Man's WarBook Review: Answered Prayers for Heinlein Fans Summary: 5 Stars
When the Grandmaster died, many of us mourned not only the passing of a fine human being but an era. No one since has quite captured the unique Heinlein style, at least on a sustainable basis, even though he hinted that he thought it was teachable.
Greats such as John Barnes, Peter F. Hamilton, James P. Hogan and more have since arisen. Each has written some remarkable stuff.
But, reading this book, I literally could not tell that it was penned by someone other than RAH. Were this happening in a few decades, I would think John Scalzi RAH reborn.
In a sense, he is. I look forward to savoring the rest of the books in this series, and beyond.
May you prosper and continue to expand our imaginations toward the stars, sir.
Book Review: Best I've read in a while. Summary: 5 Stars
This book was a real page turner. I thought that the premise was intriguing. I heard an interview with the author on "Dragon Page Cover to Cover" and it sounded very interesting. It was a fast paced story with strong characters and interesting technology, and cool aliens. I'm going to ask for the second book for Christmas.
Book Review: Best Sci-Fi novel I've read in awhile Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful book. Both the prose and characterizations are far above what you can normally expect from science fiction these days. Scalzi has imagined an interesting universe and there are a lot of intense action sequences balanced by thoughful, nuanced passages. The book also has a lot of clever, salty dialogue between the soldiers that is often quite funny.
This is the best science fiction book to come out since The Risen Empire/Killing of Worlds by Scott Westerfeld, in my opinion.
Book Review: Best sci fi author I've found in a long time Summary: 5 Stars
If you like Heinlein, you have to read Scalzi's Old Man's War. I really enjoyed it.
Amazon had been recommending it to me for some time and I kept skipping it because I'm not a big fan of military fiction - although I don't mind an occasional military science fiction book. I finally decided to try Old Man's War when it came up on Paperbackswap and I have now added all of Scalzi's other books to my wishlist!
Book Review: Brilliant Combination of Heinlein and Vonnegut Summary: 5 Stars
Amazing writing, touching and spare. Takes the best of Starship Troopers and reimagines it through the lense of vintage Vonnegut. I was actually moved to read parts aloud to my wife -- generally a no-no when genre sci-fi is on the menu.
