Book Review: "Ducky, just ducky"

Elizabeth Strout is a gifted writer that has the ability to bring the smallest nuances of pain and happiness in life to brilliant light. I was entranced by Olive Kitteredge, the main character who was loving, prickly, controlling, mean spirited, tender hearted and all manner of emotions in between. Although Olive is a difficult person to like, Strout has managed to make this character real and complex so that it is impossible not to identify with some part of Olive. Her brisk manner, her blurting out of simple truths, her deep empathy for others that comes out unexpectedly and her devoted love to her son Christopher all make up the complex bittersweet nature of Olive. In a clever set of short stories that involved in one way or another, Olive, sometimes just the mention of her name by the characters, Strout presents the reader with a series of tenderly told vignettes about the lives of the townspeople of Crosby, Maine. Loss, aging, betrayal, unrequited love all are told through various townspeople and Olive. For me, the most heartbreaking was the love she had for her son Christopher. Olive could not quite grasp that her love had been smothering, controlling, limited and that Christopher now resents her. It was heartbreaking to hear Olive question herself "But, I had loved him, hadn't I?" Strout is able to convey the sense of loss, denial, pain and confusion through just this simple sentence. With thirteen stories in all, this wonderful novel is quick reading and delivers a big emotional punch. I thought about Crosby, Maine and Olive Kitteridge long after I shut the book and marveled at the talent of Elizabeth Strout. Well done!
