Book Review: not a lot of practical advise, but one good concept
Summary: 3 Stars
Everytime someone asked me if I had the baby on a schedule, I had no idea what to say. I felt lost in this area until someone recommended Babywise. The best concept I learned was that baby should eat, have some awake time, and THEN sleep (instead of always drifting off while eating). the book stresses routine with some flexibility, using both the clock and your own common sense to determine when to feed the baby.
It also stresses working on making sure baby takes a full feeding each time, rather than snacking all day long. the book goes on to say you need to work hard to keep baby awake to finish each feeding. however, my issue isn't about baby falling asleep; rather, she sometimes takes half the bottle, then just has no interest in the rest until 45 minutes later. the book doesn't at all address this.
When it comes to naps/nighttime, the author doesn't give much practical advise or details. the book kind of says to let baby cry it out, but doesn't get into details. maybe because there isn't much to explain? I'm not sure since we haven't started that yet. I wanted to wait until baby is 4 months old, and we're going to start this week.
Unfortunately, I find every book about babies drones on and on about theories (don't they realize we are busy and tired parents, and we just want to get to the practical advice?!). But, if i walk away with one or two ideas, I still think it is worth the read. i was able to get through this in two days during naps, and would recommend it, but don't expect to have all the answers. I would also recommend pairing this book with Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. I think you really need both to get answers about schedules, feeding, and sleep.
