Book Reviews of On Chesil Beach

Book Review: I WANTED TO THROW THIS STORY ACROSS THE ROOM!!!
Summary: 3 Stars

This book describes when times were innocent, how things were left unspoken and why people trudged on without clear understanding. Written in 2007 not 1957. When most women were still virgins when they wed. They were frightened of their husbands on their wedding night!!!!!

Such an old fashion story which doesn't seem to get anywhere. His other book ATONEMENT was excellent. But this really should not have got to the printer should have stayed in draft stage.

Ian McEwan writes very well but the subject matter this time was a failure. This story is just an OK.

I bought this on audio. CD1 1 star, CD2 2 stars, CD 3 & 4 3 stars.

Ian McEwan himself narrated the story and he did a wonderful job of that.

At the end of the audio there is an interview with the author and I enjoyed that more than the story. I started to feel sorry for him he sounded so lovely in the interview and I wanted to give him a 2 star before I heard the interview. So 4 star for Narration 4 star for the interview. average final stars are 3 star.

Please don't waste your money on this audio, go and buy ANTONEMENT instead far superior!!!

Book Review: I struggled with this one
Summary: 1 Stars

Having enjoyed other works by Ian McEwan I was annoyed no end by this book. I felt I had read it all before. Is this an intellectual exercise? As for being on the short list for the Booker Prize....well I can't believe it. Better luck next time.

Book Review: I'd like a refund please...
Summary: 1 Stars

A mediocre attempt by an otherwise great author.

I read this novel during a three hour layover in the Atlanta airport, and I can't help but feel McEwan didn't spend any more time than that writing it. I'm astonished I made it through the whole thing, and if my flight hadn't been delayed I probably would've given up on it and opted instead for the AirTran manual in the seat pocket--it probably would've been more riveting.

Not to mention, there was a HUGE contradiction in the narrative that made the plot absolutely moot and aggravated me so much I complained for a good 15 minutes to the person sitting next to me in the terminal. It just felt sloppy and also lacked any conclusion whatsoever for the female lead character.

Book Review: Intellectual pornography!
Summary: 2 Stars

Did I really have to get in the bedroom with these pathetic souls? McEwan is a brilliant writer and I have enjoyed reading his other books. But this one bored me...with no empathy for the characters and their outcome. A Booker Prize...NO!

Book Review: Interesting bood, great ending.
Summary: 4 Stars

I had to read this book as part of a reading group I belong to. I thought it started out weird and couldn't understand what the story was about for most of the novel. However, it all finally came together at the end and I really enjoyed it. The book has a great story to tell and an important message to convey. I would highly recommend this book and this author -- quick, easy read.
