Book Review: 3 out of 4 ain't bad
Summary: 3 Stars
This book contains four urban fantasy novellas by different authors. Each is about 80 pages. Three are pretty good, the fourth is trash. The three good ones introduce worlds or characters and leave room for sequels.
"Alpha and Omega", by Patricia Briggs is set in the same world as her Mercy Thompson series, but with different characters, and in a different city. It introduces werewolves Anne and Charles, and lays the groundwork for her book "Cry Wolf", the first of the "Alpha and Omega" series (which won't make much sense without reading this first). It's a good story, with entertaining characters, and enough of a dark edge to hold your interest. There's nothing too unusual in this world, it stays solidly in the standard, urban fantasy, girl and werewolves mold.
"Inhuman", by Eileen Wilks, is equally good, but more creative. Her characters natures and abilities are different from anything I've read before. The story starts slowly, but picks up nicely towards the end. It sets the stage for what promises to be an interesting series. I enjoyed reading it, and I intend to buy more books in this series, and try others by this author.
"Buying Trouble", by Karen Chance, is also quite good. It's set in an alternate New York that runs on a mix of technology and magic. The protagonist is a "magical null" who's presence inhibits other magic. The world also contains an interesting mixture of elves, dragons, and other fun ideas. Ms Chance obviously has a good sense of humor. Again, I enjoyed reading it, and intend to look for following books.
"Mona Lisa Betwining", by Sunny, is garbage. When I read it, I thought the author must be a child partway through puberty. I was surprised to learn she's an adult in her thirties. The writing style is amateurish. The stilted characters exchange awkward, pointless, dialog. The minuscule plot is difficult to follow, partially because the world is poorly explained, and partially because the characters are not developed well enough to understand their motivations. The two long sex scenes (in a 80 page novella) show an adolescent obsession with the mechanical details of sex, and total ignorance of romance.
Overall, I'm glad I read this. I already knew I liked Patricia Briggs' work. This book introduced me to two more authors I intend to look for, and one I now know to avoid.
